does anyone know what "SPQR" stood for? it was worn by every soldier as a tattoo on their arm

Hi Bob, thank you very much for your kind help. we recently went to Rome for the day while my fiancee and i were on holiday in Italy (by the way i can heartily recommend a fab place to stay in Tuscany - log on to "tenuta savognano.com")i've always been fascinated by ancient Roman history. i bought myself a "ROMA" T shirt and it had the badge of Rome with Romulus and Remus suckling their mother with the legend "SPQR" over the top and i've often thought i should know what it meant - so thanks again andytyke
