Who am I, really?

Hello, I'm Jim Lynn. I was the technical lead on h2g2 when it began its development at 'The Digital Village' in January 1999. I designed the database that stores the site, and wrote a lot of the software that powers it. If you want to contact me, leave a message here, or you can email my work account at jim dot lynn at bbc dot co dot uk.

Now I work at the BBC, and have spent a lot of my time here doing much the same thing - maintaining and extending the software to do new things in and around bbc.co.uk.

I've recently found other things to work on at the BBC, although very few of them are 'public facing'. One day, I hope to complete a project that the public will actually be able to use. This year, it could happen.

In real life I'm married to Bernadette and we have four children: Charlotte, (who's eleven) Isobel (who's ten), David, who's almost eight and Emily who's five. Our first son, Alexander was born 17 weeks premature on September 7th 1998 and died at 12 days old.

David, Charlotte, Emily and Isobel, Dec 2008

Merry Christmas everyone. Here's a special Deep-Zoomy version of our Christmas Card done in Silverlight.

I'm back (Oct 24, 2011)
Well, after a hiccup last week (probably due to me not having access to my work email at the time) I've got back in to the new (old?) h2g2.

I'm really impressed that the new team were able to get it open so quickly. Much quicker than the move into the BBC (although to be fair, we did have to write a whole moderation system suitable for the BBC editorial policy from scratch).

Well done, froods.

Happy Birthday (Apr 28, 2010)
h2g2 is eleven years old today. I feel a bit guilty I'm not here more. Maybe I should write a Silverlight client for it.

Happy Christmas (Dec 24, 2008)
I feel very lax. My last journal entry was this time two years ago. I'd probably post a lot more journal entries if I thought anyone here was interested in Silverlight programming, which is what I've been blogging about elsewhere (http://jimlynn.wordpress.com).

I've made a nice Deep Zoom version of our Christmas Card this year, which you can find at http://www.uslot.com - It requires Microsoft Silverlight, so you'll be asked to install it if you don't already have it. It's a bit of fun, so please have a look. If I'm lucky, you'll be seeing a lot more Silverlight stuff from me next year, so you might as well install it now.

I hope you like it.

Happy Christmas Everyone (Dec 24, 2006)
The children are currently decorating the Christmas tree, so I thought it was about time to update my page with the (now traditional) christmas picture.

I hope everyone has a great Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

Incoming! (Feb 7, 2006)
Just a quick note to say that contractions are around four and a half minutes apart, so we're hoping to have a new arrival later today (although past history means we're not expecting it right this minute).
