Hello, and welcome to my PS. Help yourself to a coffee and a choc and anything else you can find - the more you eat the less there is for merofl .

applause AT LAST! 5+3+6+(7x4) -0 =42 Well, it took about three years and was solved in 2 mins. thanks to friends and PHM!!

Find me here in Websailor's Wacky Wildlife World in thepost
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/thepost

I am usually up in arms about something so have decided to have my own SOAPBOX. Writing it down will stop me steam OR somersault , even if you don't bother to read itdevil

disco SOAPBOX disco

STRUGGLING to Survive wah :
Albatrosses, Orang Utans, Loggerhead Turtles, Chiru (Shahtoosh)

ENDANGERED but increasing magic :
Whooping Cranes, Pandas, Golden Lion Tamarins, Mountain Gorillas (just)

FOUND Ivory Billed Woodpecker in America last year. Believed extinct. Brilliant news.disco

I haven't quite decided what to put here yet, but those are some hints. It will be my current "campaign", pet hate or interest etc. that makes me steam OR whistle

I AM:
mod handbag cuddle dragon born, Well I think I wassomersault

Here's a bit about me, the dragon and some of my interests, which perhaps you might like to share. I was christened C 0f E, but over my lifetime I think my beliefs have become encapsulated in this verse I came across recently:

"Mine is a way that is little trod
I am bound by no sect or creed;
I say my prayers to Nature's God
In the field where the lapwings breed.

I hear the wind preach and its
psalms are sung
In praise of the infinite free:
And ne'er a sermon from human tongue
Is half so divine unto me."

For over 19 years I have been a member of, and volunteer with WWF-UK, which you may recognise as The World Wide Fund for Nature, or the World Wildlife Fund panda , depending which part of the earth you inhabit! You can find WWFand its' sister organisations here:

http://www.wwf.org.uk/core/index.asp

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"We shan't save all we should like to, but we shall save a great deal more than if we had never tried."
- Sir Peter Scott (1909-89), WWF founder 1961
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Working with them has brought me new interests, new friends, and truth to tell, I probably wouldn't be using a computer at all, (however, incompetently rofl ), if the voluntary work and campaigning was not so much easier online. Actually I take that back, I am not too bad for an old 'un !

bus Got my FREE bus pass and a nationwide one coming soon applause
I don't travel much for various reasons, so I have also gained great pleasure from online journeys made by others, hence my nickname.

earth

One of these is Operation Migration. This is the microlight led migration of captive bred (highly endangered) Whooping Cranes, to establish a new flock of wild birds, migrating from Wisconsin to Florida for the first time for 100 years.

You can find them here:

http://www.operationmigration.org/Field_Journal.html

You may remember the film "Fly Away Home" about a family training Canada Geese to fly with microlights - well these are the same people.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The world? Moonlit water drops from the crane's bill."
- Zen Master Dogen, thirteenth century Japan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When I am not glued to my computer, I watch the birds in my garden as part of the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) Garden Birdwatch project. The number and species of birds are recorded throughout the week and entered on to their Database. All this information is collated, to give them a clear picture of which birds are around, in what sort of numbers and when.

tit tit

If you feel like doing a spot of birdwatching, for a good cause, take a look at these sites:

http://www.bto.org/

http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

http://www.birdforum.net

If you are interested in wildlife and environment issues generally take a look at http://www.care2.com. I find it is a handy second email site too.

Now, if you have got this far applause and ta , 'cus I didn't write all this for my own amusement. Please read on if you have the time - there's morehuh blush , Oh, well, here goes:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Take nothing but photographs,
Leave nothing but footprints ,
Kill nothing but time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I do have other interests when I can fit them , and a husband football figures somewhere in the list, plus two sons cuddle and some great friends, some of them here on h2g2.

FAVOURITE book That' a tough one - need to think.

CURRENT book Real Life too busy at present, even finding time to read a newpaper is difficult.

Death's Acre by Bill Bass & (mut check that out!)

The true story of how the "Body Farm" came into existence in the US and why it evolved. Written by the founder, with an insight in to his own life, and his quirky sense of humour. Not for the squeamish, but a really fascinating read.

If you are even remotely interested in Forensic Science or Anthropology this will be a good read. Fans of Patricia Cornwell will like this one. It was she who christened it the Body Farm with her book.

Wild Swans by Jung Chang (China)

dragon The history of China - told through the lives and experiences of three generations of Chinese women up to the present day.

****Recommended Read in view of the current upriing in Burma

From the Land of Green Ghosts by Pascal Khoo Thwe
( A Burmese Odyssey)

ghost A very moving account of the life of a young Burmese man, from his tribal beginnings, through the uprisings in Burma, to life at Cambridge University.

For Background to that book take a look here:

http://www.dassk.org/index.php

star The last two books give a vivid insight into life under an unwelcome dictatorship. Something all those of us who live in a democracy should read before we dare to sit in judgment.

Rogue Element by Terence Strong - goodluck

Ireland, politics and the Secret Services - can only be described as enlightening and worrying.

blush I also have a weakness for Catherine Cookson books - a modern day Dickens - though some would disagree.

MY KIND OF musicalnote

Pan Pipes: New Orleans Funeral Music: Johnie Cash: Elvis: light classical: Viennese music - in fact anything from any genre, so long as it is melodic, has a beat, or touches me in some way. I also like "quirky stuff" with a sense of humour that usually comes under the title "worst record ever made" erm

Phew! I need a tea or two, and a lie down, so will see you later footprints run

If you managed to get this far, drop me a note - or did I do all that for nothing?

I'm Home (Oct 19, 2011)
Thank you everyone, I am here at last and so happy. I have been extremely busy but have still missed h2g2, even more than I thought I would. I have made some good friends here.

Thank you to everyone who has done such stalwart work to get this up and running for us, and good luck for future months as we move on.

Please know how grateful us ordinary mortals are for your dedication.

HAPPY EASTER LESSON (Apr 22, 2011)
Here in the UK the weather is glorious and trees and flowers are blossoming all around in spite of the doom and gloom of recession etc. Nigel sent me this and I just had to share:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzgzim5m7oU

It only takes a minute but it really makes you think.

Take care,

cheers

PHM says Farewell (Dec 14, 2010)
I haven't been on h2g2 much of late. As many of you already know, PHM, my other half has been very ill, and finally on Saturday 11th December he went to a better place.

He has been instructed to look out for our absent friends from h2g2 and say Hi.

Thanks, to those of you who know, for the kind words, for those who don't this is the quickest way I have of telling those of you I have missed.

Great British Waste Menu (Aug 28, 2010)
disco disco Are you in the UK? Do you hate wasting food? So do I. I have just finished watching 'Great British Waste Menu' on BBC1 iPlayer. It is available till 9:59pm Wednesday 1st September 2010. The BBC really should extend the time it is available.

It is a real eye opening and takes you behind the scenes at our food producers, wholesalers and supermarkets, not to mention what we waste as individuals. I am sure this goes on in many other countries too but I am ashamed of the UK.

It is truly CRIMINAL! The programme is entertaining, not a rant or a lecture so please watch if you can.
