I'm a retired but still occasionally active freelance camera operator, specialising in camera jib and camera pedestal work with a bit of hand held on the side, semi-retired as it were after 39 years of nearly full time work. Currently I am thoroughly enjoying it, with my first paid gig just two days after my official retirement date and many more coming up. I collect post WWII 35 mm cameras, prewar Kodak and knockoffs. This includes copies of Kodak like the Baldur and Kodak copies of other things like their ill-fated *instant* camera. Also some vintage sci-fi books and comics. I used to collect miniature books, but I got a little obsessive about it so I gave most away. Go figure. Socially I am presently a bit of a loner, but I don't really mind that. My three daughters (don't call me Steven Douglas), grand daughter and some good friends are most of the company I currently enjoy and even those in small doses. I seek no steenken batches here, no record number of entries, no praise or damnation. Merely entertainment, information, friends, some (mostly) intelligent conversations, lots of humour and to share what little I have to offer.
I've been a gas station jockey, been an appliance delivering "Swamper", warehouse stocker, pulp mill worker, logging "Chokerman" and a carpenter's assistant, all before I was 23 while going to uni and then technical college. Since then I've been a stage hand, an apprentice camera operator, a camera operator (known as a "Cameraman" in those unenlightened days), a videographer and finally a Director of Photography. With my trusty camera(s) I have visited three continents and numerous countries including working at four Olympics. ----BEGIN CODE BLOCK---- Version 1.1 RO Y++ N++ SP@ A+ P+ L++ M S V- E+ PR p a++ B++ TV+ r++ D T-- nh++ C+ m- t ----END H2G2 CODE BLOCK---- No, never exposing silver anymnore but realigning rust or bits (film =/= video tape, hard drives, SDHV or P2 cards) 2 + 0 + 0 + [ ( 8 - 3 ) X 8 ] = 42 (Thank you, six7s!) Three quotes I've heard in the last week that have caught my fancy-
(On the occasion of my daughter contemplating life). "I've heard that if you live only in the present you will live forever."
(On parenthood). "Over protective parents raise the best liars."
(Talking about an old piece of taxidermy.) "Smells like a Sumo wrestler took a dump on a burning tire." Click here to discuss this

Scheduling and budgeting.
Radio and TV have become background sounds while I actually DO things, returning to the media area when something sounds interesting. I am reliving the days when I would drive to a location for hours, switching from transmitter to transmitter listening to CBC One. Now it has become the information and music soundtrack to my internet, my cooking, cleaning and waiting for an offer to buy my apartment. I think I preferred scenery but it is still enjoyable.
I schedule my time loosely but I budget my finances very closely now, down to the now obsolete penny. I plan for my working retirement, using the Multiple Listing Service online map to slide a frame up and down the East coast of Vancouver Island, looking at prospective properties that are near the ocean, have a good sized workshop and walking distance to a village or community (hopefully with a cafe and/or pub). So far the exotic favourites include Union Bay, Parksville and Ladysmith (they all have interesting stories as to how they got their names).
It's actually quite a bit of fun, give it a try- (avoid the Dreaded Mobile Home!)
http://www.realtor.ca/map.aspx
(Zoom in with the mouse wheel or click on the icon and move the frame around with a 'grab')
Other than that I try to get in some exercise every single day and have some time with some healthy cooking (now and then I have a spoiler meal). I'm trying some new health drinks in the morning (and some different beers in the evening).
This seems to be working out!

Lazy
(Mar 25, 2013)
I find that increasingly I can waste an entire morning or evening just reading, surfing or watching the idiot box. My recent purchase of Apple TV and Netflix hasn't helped any. The problem is that unless I go for a long walk or exercise I rapidly feel tired and almost weak afterwards. I have to force myself to get up and out, whereas previously I would think "What a nice day for a walk". Now insomnia has added to my malaise (it is 4:20 AM right now).
I need motivation. Somebody give me a kick in the arse. Click here to discuss this

I dreamt that I was crying.
(Jan 22, 2013)
I dreamt that I was crying, And woke with my eyes dry. I knew someone I never met, Who only wrote a sigh.
This place is real, this place is not, But here we are and they are not. How real they were it's hard to say, Just sad to know they couldn't stay.

Nothing Days
(Dec 4, 2012)
Now that I am semi-retired (which seems like when I was freelancing, with a small bit of income in addition to occasional work) I find myself having days when there is nothing to do. Now don't get me wrong, there is ALWAYS something to do, whether here at this site or on my never-ending repairs or improvements to my home. But there are days where I get up, go out for a bite of breakfast, check the news, go for a walk, make lunch, make coffee, surf the web, make dinner and watch a film. Nothing really accomplished but I feel a bit guilty. I only commit one of the deadly sins, I admit but why do I feel like the day was entirely wasted? Click here to discuss this
