and I still go on living in the Netherlands.
I am at least twice a true researcher:
1+7*8-8-3-4 = -1-7+8+8+34 = 42
About 30 years ago I graduated in experimental physics at the university of Utrecht. This (the physics, not the city) may explain why I meddle in physical and mathematical discussions.
Also I am a science fiction fan, and a collector in my mind of interesting but seemingly useless bits of knowledge.

(Jun 27, 2005)
Yesterday a had a totally new experience, I was a passenger in a hot air balloon<flyhigh>. It was a birthday from my kids and their partners, and a few weeks ago I had reserved yesterday as THE day. Around midday I got the phonecall that all was well, and where we should start (as it is very weather dependent, there is always the chance it will be cancelled, for instance because off way too much wind or thunderstorm danger).
So around 20.00 we all looked how the giant balloons were rolled out and the baskets prepared. With a large fan the balloon was filled with cold air first and then with a meters long flame the temperature was raised to 80-90C and we climbed into the basket. After a last check the helpers let go and we were in the air .
In the beginning it was a bit frightening, to see so much nothing below you, so I held on tight. Soon I relaxed and enjoyed the flight. The other three balloons that took off from the same field were nearby, sometimes lower, sometimes higher, as we couls steer a bit by changing height. A few kilometers away I could clearly see the city where I grew up, and hazy beyond it our current homeor at least some landmarks of it. Slowly we passed the rivers Rhine and Waal, and wondered about the number of houses with trampoilines or swimmingpools (or both). You only could hear dogs barking at us, and the loud rumble of the bursts of burning gas. Much too soon the sun was almost down, and we had to find a landing place. After a few bumps the basket stood still and the process of emptying the balloon started. The cars that had followed us took aboard the taken apart balloon and we were baptised for our first flight of one hour 25 minutes with .
Only my family had followed also, so I thanked the pilot and the helpers, and we went home, while the others first went back to the starting place to be collected by their family.
It was a great experience and if anyone ever gets the chance, grab it with both hands.

House for sale
(Mar 5, 2004)
Alea Iacta Est, The Die is Cast. Two real estate agents have looked at our house, and in a few days we will decide who will get the job of selling the house we called home for 25 years.
Now the kids are big enough to leave home, we can get back to the part of the country we both grew up, we only have to find a new house first, but that should not be a large problem.
The expected timescale: april: a few days holiday, june: our son moves in with his gf, july: four days marches in Nijmegen for the fifth time, august/september getting the key of the new house, a possible internetless interlude , september/october delivering the keys of our current home.
It will be busy and interesting times

Away for a few days walk
(Jul 13, 2003)
It's the time of year again.
Tomorrow my wife and I will leave for Nijmegen for the Four day Marches. Four days of walking 40 KM a day.
As it will be our fourth time, we know what to expect, only the weather may be a problem. Tuesday 26 centigrade, Wednesday 28 plus ending in thunderstorms. Thursday and Friday probably a fine 24.
So I will be offline until Saturday at least.

Long Married
(Apr 15, 2003)
Today is our 31th wedding anniversary .
It gives a strange feeling when so many people here are planning to get married, or just started, or ended one or more marriages.
We all say "I will stay with you forever", only I could not, I cannot see so far in the future and it gave me the feeling I had to promise something I could not be sure I was able to keep. It took some years for my wife to understand and accept it, but now it seems I could have promised it after all
Onward for the next 30 (if that much time is given us)

Just a message if anyone is looking for me the next few days.
This weekend I may not find much (or even any ) time to be online.
Monday 10-2 I will go on holiday for a few days, returning friday 14-2. Let's say it is a jointly arranged birthday present .
See you all again in a week
