(Sep 9, 2000)
Sunday, September 3 was Minnie & Dean's annual pig roast at their farm at Petersfield, Manitoba. It just gets bigger and bigger. This year there were around 130 people.
Minnie, her sisters and daughters cook for a week in preparation, making salads, meat balls, holpchi, saurkraut, and desserts. There are always several varieties of pie - pumpkin, apple, cherry, Saskatoon, rhubarb, plus apple slice and triffle. Early in the morning Dean puts 4 or 5 huge pork roasts on the giant barbecue, where they turn and cook till supper time. People arrive all afternoon and gather to talk in groups all over the yard and in the shop, where supper is served.
Once everyone is stuffed, and the dishes are all cleared away, the bonfire is lit, and everyone moves their lawn chairs into a circle, so they can chat, tell jokes, or just stare into the flames. Minnie makes pinatas for the kids, and everyone gathers to watch the fun.
Right after supper Dean, my pair, Gord and Harley, and Minnie's nephew, Henry went out into the field and set up the fireworks. This year we had a huge display, and it took them nearly 2 hours to get set up. It took an hour to set them all off. They had these great rockets this year that went way up then exploded. Just as a string of 10 were going off, a small plane went over, and we were all joking about shooting him down.
After the fireworks, we all had more dessert, and another coffee, before we said good night and drove home. It was a good time, and something we look forward to every fall. Click here to discuss this

FEELING OLD TODAY-JULY 21/00
(Jul 21, 2000)
Today my baby is 21 years old. Harley James was born 21 years ago today, 7 weeks early, weighing 4 lb 3 oz, and only 14 inches long. He was the size of a doll.
A bright, handsome young man, he's successful in his career, happy in his personal life, and a joy to his parents. We're so proud of him and wish him all the best life has to offer. He's come a long way, and the future looks particularly bright for our dear son.

Day trip to Brandon July 5, 2000
(Jul 6, 2000)
We had such a nice day yesterday. Up early for holidays, at 7:00 and on the road by 8:30 heading for Brandon, Manitoba to have lunch with my mother-in-law. We went north to Stonewall for breakfast at a cafe owned by a friend, then down the old highway through little farming villages to north of Portage la Prairie, along the Trans Canada to Brandon. We passed corps along the way - wheat high and dark green, canola, the yellowest yellow you can imagine, and flax just starting to turn blue. We'd had a heavy thunder storm the night before, and some crops were just devastated - flattened out in huge patches and mushed to pulp by the rain. At "Grandma's" we looked at old family pictures, and put some aside to bring back, blow up and reprint on the computer. We lunched at the Princess Cafe, a cafe that's been on the corner of Princess Avenue and 10th Street forever, had a walk around downtown, and not long after, headed for home.
Along the way home, north of Brandon we passed under a storm cloud with pounding rain and hail, and bright blue sky behind it. In all we crossed back and forth under that cloud 3 times.
It was a wonderful time. I have the best mother-in-law in the world. She's funny, and interesting, and has such great tales to tell of growing up on Oak River, and raising my husband and his two brothers. Its always a joy to visit her.

After 6 weeks off work for a broken pelvis, the doctor's finally sprung me. At 7:30 am Monday morning, I'll be back at my desk at Mandak Metal Processors. Hate my job, but I've been watching daytime TV for 5 of the 6 weeks, and work beats that!! Click here to discuss this

BIG FIRE IN SELKIRK
(May 3, 2000)
May 3/00
Yesterday we had a big fire in Selkirk, Manitoba. Down on the waterfront there is a seniors' condo complex, and Phase 2 was just under construction. Just before noon yesterday, the new building caught fire. It was a hot, windy day yesterday: 31 deg. C with up to 70 km/hr winds from the east. Clouds of black smoke covered the down town area, and 4 volunteer fire departments were on hand: Selkirk, St. Andrews, St. Clements and East St. Paul. They couldn't control the fire, so a water bomber and helecopter were called in and eventually doused the blaze, but not before it had destroyed the building, and burned down the old dairy next door, and melted the vinyl siding on the existing senior' building. No one was hurt, but the value of the new building was $6,000,000.00. Click here to discuss this
