I know this is the usual Christian comment to say that we'll never know what it really was.
But you've a good few ideas and I'd have to agree with you that there was definately something unususl going on up there. Think it's likely to be some form of unusual astral activity, like the comet or the movements of Mars and Venus. they can definately lok like very bright stars.
