Gladiator, the veritable masterpiece from the creative genius Ridley Scott managed to send most of the other films to 'Elysium' during this year's Oscar ceremony. If managed to successfully scoop 5 our of the 11 it was nominated for.
Best Film - Gladiator. Best Actor - Russell Crowe. Best Visual Effects - Gladiator. Best Sound - Gladiator. Best Costume Design - Gladiator.
Unfortunately, Ridley Scott did not manage to win an Oscar for Best Director, depsite his honourable nomination. Unbelievable. Ridley is the best director around today in my humblest of opinions. Anyone here ever seen Blade Runner?
*ever seen Blade Runner*
Just a few times!
Anyone who comes to my house tends to ask why I have 3 copies of it. 1 orig cut vid, 1 dir cut vid and 1 DVD. I would have thought it was obvious.
Ridley Scott is indeed a fine director (most of the time):
Gladiator Thelma & Louise Black Rain Blade Runner Alien
Personally I think he may not have got the Oscar for best director because people still have not forgiven him for G.I. Jane!
I am still not sure about RC getting best actor though. He definitely looked like a "hard man born on a hard day during a hard year during a freak outbreak of total hardness" but not sure as the actual 'acting' was that great.
Crouching Tiger getting 4 Oscars made my day, a fine film

A fellow fan! How fantabulistic is that?! I agree about Russell Crowe however, his acting was good, but perhaps not Oscar standard.
Ridley is a genius.
Ok, top 3 directors (subject to review)
Ridley Scott
James Cameron:
Terminator Terminator (2) The Abyss Aliens
Maybe even True Lies
But probably not Titanic
Luc Besson:
Leon Nikita Fifth Element
Ridley is my fav'.
Luc Besson is cool; he invented the language featured in the fifth element, which I think is admirable.
But Stanley Kubrick is my favourite:
2001, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, Spartacus, Dr. Strangeglove
Good one, yes Kubrick is a fine director (I did say my selection was subject to review)
How about Peter Weir?
The Truman Show Dead Poets Society The Mosquito Coast Witness Year of Living Dangerously Gallipoli
Witness = cool; John Book is excellent Mosquito Coast I have not 'yet' seen, but I'm sure Harrison Ford is good in it Truman Show - I have not seen! I can't believe it! And I have not seen the other films either
Witness is a good film by it's self, but I need to see more of Mr. weir to reach a better rounded conclusion.
I'm trying to think of some other cool directors. Stephen Spielberg has got it sorted, but I don;t like recommended him because he gets 'all' of the attention. Francis Ford Coppolla is excellent; and his work on the Godfater has stodd the test of time.
All of them are good, but if I was going to pick one in particular to recommend it would have to be Dead Poets, fantastic film (IMHO)
Spielberg and Coppolla are fine directors.
Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann are not so bad either. At this point I think I am running out of directors who have not cancelled out fine work with complete tosh.
Michael Mann - I know about him through Manhunter. And Scorcese (excuse poor spelling) is really cool. He really likes Robert De Niro, doesn;t he?
Best Regards, Rhys
