Not as is why Douglas chose 42 for the book but in deep thought why would it be?

Well, as Deep Thought said, you have to know the question to know what the answer means, and if we knew both the answer and the question, the universe would implode or something.
I had a Drama Teacher in high school who used to say that the answer was 36 until you were 18  . It was a lovely in-joke for those of us who had read the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
