Any chance you could change all those non-standard characters to special codes before they're passed to the sub-editor, Bluebottle. That would save David a lot of trouble. The n-dashes should be &ndash; for example.

He contacted me to say he wouldn't be acting as a sub-editor in the new h2g2.

What's the situation? Did he take on this project? Were the entries transferred over to his ownership?
