HI

I use Mozilla as my browser, but one thing I don't like is the fact that those pedantic Mozilla people refuse to get the browser to display <alt> tags as tool tips "because W3C say they ar no for this"

(full (and tedious debate here http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25537)

To get Tool Tips you *should* use <title> tag, and they refuse to change it.

I noticed today that h2 smilies have the <title> tag and therefore show tool tips, but all of the other graphics don't.

Any reason for this?

Any chance of changing it for the 0.2% of us who use Mozilla?

Cheers

CH

It's the same for IE for Mac. What we need is <alt> AND <title>.

Done - it's under 'Tool Tips on Graphics' in Development-Features.

Cool - now when the "technical Evanglists" from Mozilla come banging on your door you can tongueout to them.

Shouldn't they be different? EG, the Front Page button should have 'Front Page' as the ALT tag, and 'h2g2 Front Page' as the TITLE tag. Similarly, the Read button should have ALT="Read" TITLE="Interesting Things to Read in the Guide".

Except that's what it does, anyway... doh

So you're just talking about <PICTURE> tags? Or something else?

The alt tag argument has been going for a while. Basically the theory is that alt tags should only be used to display text in the place of graphics where graphics are turned off (or in non-visual/non-graphic browsers). I guess Mozilla turned off alt tooltips to try and encourage this use.

The link above contains part of the debate over at Mozilla.org, I think it is a futile one and the efforts should e made to w3c to get them to accept the common practice.

But who am I to get involved? biggrin

I found a practical reason to use good alt and title tag linking.

When browsing h2g2 on wap (not that I'm sad or anything), I noticed that the smileys could use better alt tagging. For example, the smiley smiley is replaced with < smiley > and sadface is replaced with < sadface >. It would be better if they could be : - ) and : - ( respectively.
