Special glasses are available to make it safe to look at the sun, as they block out all but the brightest light.
Don't use them in conjunction with binoculars, however tempting. You will melt holes through the glasses, and end up looking directly at the sun through binoculars.
I should know because I did it a few hours ago. Fortunately, no harm done.
