Apart from being a tasty snack option eggs have had other uses over the years. Egg whites mixed with pigment were (and still are, as far as I know) used to produce 'tempera' paintings. Eggwhite is pretty hardwearing stuff, so even ancient paintings of this type have survived. Also in the early days of photography, one of the methods of 'fixing' the photograph was to use an eggwhite mixture!
