I think Lord of the Rings should be number one. It was recently voted 'Book of the Century', an accolade I think it deserves. I re-read it from cover to cover two or three times every year.
Must grumble about your choice as number one, however. Being a Director of h2g2's very own 'Freedom From Faith Foundation' I am duty bound to argue. Do you know who wrote the Bible, and how it was compiled? If you follow the links from my page, you can visit us at the FFFF where we have been discussing the Bible exhaustively. You will find a number of people that agree with you, and a number who will argue till the farm animal of your choice comes home.
You also might like to read my entry on the Council of Nicea - available from my page or the Foundation. If you aren't a Bible scholar it may open your eyes...

For what it's worth, I don't have a problem with the Bible being top of the list. In terms of the effect, both for good and for bad, it's had on millions of people it surely has to be considered. However, to be fair, if you include the Bible, you've also got to include the Koran, the Mahabarata (have I got that right?), and so on.
Considering only secular books, you really should check out Wuthering Heights. Every time I read that book, it blows my mind. just because it's old doesn't mean it's boring...
Dead right about Harry Potter though. I can't wait for the next one...
