change the ing ink cartridge on a ing Epson SX215.
The instr. glibly say:
'open the cover', 'instal the cartridge'.
The diag. shows the carriage being stopped in exactly the right position but, in practice, its stopped in an inaccessible position and is (very) resistant to moveing by hand .

My Epson requires me to run the maintenance software to change the cartridges.
This is a problem because the maintenance software frequently stalls my computer.
I tend not to print stuff.
B
wELL, i JUST WENT TO THE MAINTENANCE SOFTWARE ON MY 'pROGRAMMES' BUTTON.
It offered ways of changing a cartridge using:
*Printer buttons * Computer.
Then for each it very helpfully (I don't think!)said 'Check ther instruction booklet'
As I said, the instr. say nothinbg about the carriage being in the wrong place <flan <steam

Is your printer switched on when you try it? If you open the lid whilst it's switched on, it should move to the middle. When you switch it off the cartridge will return to it's normal, tucked away place.
My apologies if you've already tried that.
Hi vip. Yes, I've tried that. Even tried switching it off and on with the cover open in the hope that it might stiop in the right place - but no joy .
Think I might pop along to PC World and ask 'em.

I don't know if this link will work properly:

When you switched it off, did you do it at the wall? If you only do it at the proper button it will sort itself out before powers itself down.

Follow the first Epson links. They eventually tell you which buttons to press
Thanks Lil,
This is what the Epson links say,
<If the carriage is not in the ink cartridge replacement position and the red ink light is on, always press the Stop Button Stop/ Maintenance/ Ink/ ink cartridge replacement button (depending on your printer model) to move it. Do one of the following:
* Press the button mentioned above (depending on your model) until the carriage is in the ink change position on the right. * Hold down the same button for three seconds to move it to the ink cartridge replacement position. * When the carriage moves out, remove the cartridge.>
My printer only has a 'Stop' button - not a maintenance button.
However:
* Nothing happens *Nothing happens *... so I can't remove the ing cartridge!!!!
(Also, my printer doesn't have a red ink light either)
Oh dear
Calm down, Al. We don't want you blowing a blood vessel
*removes ALL sharp objects from the vicinity*
Press the "index sheet" and "scan" buttons at the same time. That brings up a menu on the LCD screen, use the arrows to choose "ink cartridge replacement"
Another non-functional link, you'll need to copy and paste: ftp://download.epson-europe.com/pub/download/3233/epson323397eu.pdf
d'Elephant.
That certainly brought the carriage to the right place to remove the cartridges (Why couldn't it say that in the instructions)... but now I can't remove the ing black cartridge.
Ah, I've just done it, but it wasn't easy
It's technology. 'Technology' and 'easy' just don't happen in the same sentence often enough
I'm pretty sure that the folk who design these things have shares in the manicure business as well, I always seem to break at least one nail, but I've got a cunning plan...
I get Grandad to do it
I'm tempted to boycott Epson in future
Also, we need at least two new s - <tearhairout> and <sledgehammer> (for breaking up useless machinery, with particular reference to Epson printers

They are incredibly difficult cartridges to change, the problem I always get is that the printer refuses to recognise the cartridges and changing one starts a chain reaction, even though I haven't done anything to the other three....
Note to self:
Just had to change cartridges again. This time the display kept saying 'Change the Ink Cartridge' (Well I just HAD )
So, I kept pressing the start button, but kept getting the same message
Eventually it said, ''No ink cartridges installed' (Well, there were - including one brand new black one>grr>)
Eventually I got a message saying 'Charging'. So all seems well.
I think one has to wait 2.5 mins before printer recognises that new cartridges have been installed
It's been a while since I had a printer connected to my computer (I hardly use it and it was just using electricity for damn all purpose really) but I seem to recall that when I changed the ink cartridges I had to do it via Control Panel to get the cartridge to land in the right position.
I can't understand why the manual can't just detail the exact instructions
I read this and laugh.
I will nevereverneverever buy an inkjet printer again.
I didn't print a whole heck of a lot and had to replace perfectly full ink cartriges that had gummed up from under usage and replace crappy printers that didn't work. Then I had to throw away ink cartridges that didn't fit the new printer and go buy some new ones. For the decade of 1995-2005 I calculated my actual price per copy to be $87.65.
Laser printers are the only way to go. They are more expensive, but... they work when you need them to. Even more realistic is to pay the printer or even buy a beer for your neighbor and use their printer.
Except at work. Hewlett Packard black and white laser printer with a really big toner cartrige. I can't remember the model number but the toner refill company that did NOT sell printers reccomended it. My price per copy is under 3 cents, it is built properly, it is fast, it is reliable (even in a very dusty and abusive environment) and I wouldn't replace it unless the repair estimate exceeded the price of a new HP.
But inkjet printers? That's a part of my life I'm not going back and repeating. I'd rather not have a printer at all. ...unless I could re-fit a dot-matrix printer with a chisel and feed it stone tablets... There's an idea... Hmmmm...
