Isn't there a case for Guide Entries to have hit-meters; this should give an indication of their popularity? (Popularity and Quality recently merged to form a construct I term as "Sciolistic Appeal"!) Researcher 215421

Difficult to do I would guess.
WOuld you make the hitmeter for popularity going by the number of posts made to an article. That might merely mean that someone made a controversial point that is closely argued or it might be that the conversation is a huggy-smiley conga type. In either case it is the conversation that is popular not the article.
Or would you do it for the number of people who simply viewed it. This could get skewed by web spiders for example which are simply caching the page and are not really reading it.
We do have a "Have you missed" series of article which are brought back to the front page by popular request. Would that fit your bill?

Feature suggestions such as this by the way are better posted on the Development-Features page.
That's where those who matter (ie. the editors) will look.
I think this has been discussed. Popularity does not reflect the usefulness of an Entry. Personally, my opinion is that not having these stats displayed, which it wouldn't be all that hard to do (I think), is the more friendly state of affairs.
The BBC are pretty coy about the number of hits a page recieves. The most detail I've been able to find on the subject is the number of page impressions for the whole of the BBCi site! Therefore I can't see them agreeing to individual counters on Guide Entries, what ever the merits of the idea.
So you agree with me then, GD!
Hi whoami!
I agree with you, even if someone only ever gets into one thread with one person, if they keep chatting, they've made a new friend, which can't be a bad thing (with a few exceptions!)
It's not a contest for number of hits as far as I'm concerned. There are useful statistics though on the stats page; link on my journal space.
ning round tonight in case we get loads of newbies via the Sunday Times. I've put RhoMuNuQ's useful link on my journal space too as a quick way of making syure I'm doing it right!
Anyone heard from Abi yet? Is she still in Court? (for the benefit of lurkers, she's on jury service, not on trial. Or so she says anyway!)

I'm glad you found the link helpful!
Abi posted to the Ace forum today to say that she was back now!
RhoMuNuQ
Oh good! Still haven't got a reply to my posts; but thought there would be soon, she'll probably hate me for all the hassle I've given her!
I've not pushed the Ace Forum invite either, partly 'cos she's been away & also 'cos we recently changed to broadband & I didn't know if it would affect the email address.
I've aced 3 tonight (Arthur Dent, Lezettli & bribery); I think that's enough for now!
By the way, does anyone realise Moose, who became an Ace when I did, is caught up in these bushfires in Canberra? -- see my links bit for a direct link to bbc news page; wondering whether to put an email message on it & mention hootoo in passing??

You may need to ask Abi for another invite as they are only valid for a week!
Don't worry, one tiny mistake as a new ace won't do any harm!
I'm sorry to hear about Moose, by the way...
RhoMuNuQ
The Italics are nice, friendly people unless:
a) You insult them. b) You kill the site. c) You break the HouseRules. d) You waste their time *on purpose*.
That way, people are more likely to be nice and friendly back!
Whoami?
I'm pretty sure I haven't done any of those; but it's been so long now I'm worried she'll think I'm "wasting her time" ie: I seem to be doing OK anyway.
Maybe I'll ask Z (who I talk to by email) to let me have the Ace Forum email address; if not I'll just carry on till someone tells me off?
Terri
Moose is for now - but the situation is still tense with hot weather and high winds making sure that everyone is watching carefully...
If you are interested Moose's thread is at F90380?thread=239753
You can only post to the aceforum address if you're signed up to it - so drop Abi a line her Personal Space [you can find it from Team] and ask for another invite. You need to get signed up to the forum - it's part of being a volunteer and is really important - when we're dealing with problems, or there's something we're asked to do, it happens on the email groups.
Whoami?
Thanks, whoami, just popped over there & left a message. Trying to catch up on backlog, I've missed about 3wks due to heavy problems in RL, hopefully better now.
--just also discovered your brilliant link to the dictionaries etc.; what a fantastic resource, I'm in the process of writing a book at the moment, this will be phenomenally useful!
to all concerned!
Terri
Sure, Terri! Nice to see you're back with us! If you have any problems, be sure to let me know!
Abi'll be fine with the delay, I'm sure - we all have to logout sometime, when RL gets too busy! If she isn't, just grovel a bit!
Terri
Trawling through backlog, resurrecting this 'cos of a debate on thread.
Could you post thread link, please?
