Thank you for your advice about the damping off problem. This is only the second year I've been growing from seed and so last year I was starting from scratch - new seeds, pots, compost, feed etc.
It was my mum who suggested the damping off problem - which I'd never heard of - after I explained my seeds looked pinched at the base and then wilted and died, so last weekend I started from scratch, washed every single one of the pots I'd collected and put the old compost into the garden.
So far, since replanting I have lots of very healthy looking lettuce seedlings and sweetpeas and lot of other starting to show signs of germination. I'm also watering the seedlings with cold chamomile tea as I've read that it's a good natural anti-fungal.
Fingers crossed all with be well in the garden once I plant out, though I'll have to find a way to treat the compost there to make sure it's good an healthy.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for your advice, which I neglected to do when I replied before.
Thank you Em
