Oh so what. We're not a Porn Link Site, and it's a good name.
Yeah, right!
I just did a search for Green Guy and came up with Bare Naked Ladies(?)...

You might think it's a good name, but to me, in the very slim chance we actually got one of these smileys, it conjures up the idea of something other than hitchhiker. Besides that, I'd rather type something along the lines of <hh> or <orb> or <hitch> or even <noii> (no eyes) than 'green guy'... Besides that, I could even accept a smiley if it wasn't green. As long as it has hands, either hitching or stuck in it's [missing]ears and no eyes, teethy grin and I'm ok widdit. That might be enough to avoid any copyright issues (of which I'm still not convinced there are any).
Green Guy may seem like a cute name for it... heck it IS a cute name for it, but it has been used by someone who usurped our little smiley planet for hir nefarious (ok... I'm not a prude... I have it bookmarked ) purposes.... Actually I don't wanna give any recognition to someone who beat us to the use of this icon.
Also, think about this... if we call it 'green guy' then someone from here may do a search for this image by calling it that and be lead to that site... If they want to find that site they can use more germain search words than that and I don't want there to be any more confusion about where this icon came from than there already is.
Anyway... and all.... I don't want any splitters in our united front of <hitchhiker>!!!
How about making <hitchhiker> link to ?

has eyes... but it's very close.
has nearly the correct sentiment, but still isn't quite there. I'm still just suprised that a <hitchhiker> wasn't implemented from the very beginning when this was still under TDV. It just seems so obvious.
I agree. And on that note I must say again that we haven't really stated our case to the Italics so we can't really complain. I'd like to know what we're waiting for.

We wait for nothing...
Of course, the Italics have stated their case. They think there are copyright issues. I don't know that there are. I have looked one of the publisher's websites for info on getting copyright clearance and found that they require written (snail-mail) correspondence. Considering that none of US are authorised agents of h2g2 I don't know that a letter from one of us will get us anywhere, but feel free to volunteer. (Anyone?... Anyone?... Bueller?...)
Anyway, that said, Hey, I'm all for redoubling our efforts. Lead the way, Mr X.
But to where?

That just reminded me of Roberto Benini's scene in the film "Night on Earth"... He plays an italian cab driver (the movie is a series of cab rides in different cities around the world) confessing to a bishop who's just gotten into his cab... he's confessing that he covets his brothers sheep!.. the bishop has a heart attack!
<snigger>
By the way, I'm currently in a conversation with an Italic about our Smiley and could use your help.

I don't know why I didn't see it before, but there it was on the dust jacket for my "Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide"...
"Jacket art ©1996 by Peter Cross"
I don't know if this is good news or bad for us. At least I found who has the copyright. I don't know if this is the same 'Peter Cross' from Guildford who did illustration for some of Anthony Phillips' album covers or not, but that is the likeliest trail I could find.
