Hello Entry of the Month people.
I have seen the news in the post about the demise of Entry of the Month in 2011.
I have enjoyed Entry of the Month because it was an easy way to just turn up and do something. I really don't know why more people didn't vote for it.
All the threads about the demise of h2g2 are a bit overwhelming and I am sure there are hundreds more I haven't found but one thing I did notice is that they are saying we will have elections to decide things and I thought of EoTM and for some reason.
Anyway I hope I am wrong. I usually am. Thank you for EoTM over the years.
Thank you for supporting the competition, Brown Furby
We've decided to suspend the competition as not enough new entries are being written (only 5 in January, compared to 48 in the month when the competition started). If the rate picks up again, and the Editors seem to think it will, then we'll resume the competition
You're also right when you say that not enough people voted. I'd have liked more - sometimes we had the situation when an entry won with only 2 votes. There's no reason I can think of why more people didn't vote - the competition was featured on the h2g2 Front Page regularly, as well as in the Post, and on Galaxy Babe's journal, too (so thousands must have known about it). Maybe it's just a symptom of a general malaise about the site as we all waited for a long-expected relaunch. Now we have that taking place, maybe things will pick up once again.
Thanks again, and see you when the competition resumes!
Icy
Nope! I think that you and the post staff should pick an entry and announce it, never mind the vote we can trust you lot to do a good job.
Less fuss and moer interest in the post.
you could post the of the rest of the others out of past moths entries
Ask the h2g2 Eds to vote as well.
I have liked this competition as it always drew my attention to some very interesting entries please keep it going.
It's not the drop in voting that has persuaded us to suspend the competition, Bob, it's the drop in new entries being written. Just to choose one entry from 5, however it's done, is going to dilute the achievement when previous winners have been chosen from 30 or more.
We're all ready to start the competition again when the numbers increase
<<We've decided to suspend the competition as not enough new entries are being written (only 5 in January, compared to 48 in the month when the competition started).>>
I think you meant to say "not enough new entries are being published" didn't you, Icy? According to ComingUp there are loads of written and accepted articles, either awaiting sub-editing, some are with sub-eds, or their turn on the FP. It's the Eds that decided to publish only 1 new article per week?
Although I do agree with the suspension of the competition until there's a good double number in the pool to pick from
Yes, that sounds like a reasonable figure to aim for. If we get 10 or more published entries (discounting university projects) for two successive months, then I'll be happy to reinstate it. How's that?
Would there be a catch up competition Entry of the Missing Quarter or something, it seems a bit mean for those entries chosen in early 2011 to miss their chance of getting a vote.
Will Front Page Archive continue anyway, I do think this is a very useful page.
SEF compiles the Front Page Archive. Yes, it is a very useful page.
