My daughter asked me "why didn't they want anyone on their planet?" with reference to Heart of Gold's approach to Magrathea. I'd never thought about it before, and I'm not sure of the reason.Anyone?
because tourists litter?
I always assumed they were worried about industrial spies, although planet designing and building seems fairly specialised....
Well, the missiles where from the automated defence system. Which was set up because the factories were mothballed due to the downturn in galactic finances. And the people put into SA too.
Hmmm. Prevention of industrial espionage? Securing patents and other proprietary information? Generally stopping other people from stealing their stuff?
Also, wasn't the defence system index linked? So that once someone would be to pay for their services it would be whiched off and the planet would be open for business again.

tourists also have a tendency to pick up things that don't belong to them, like diamonds, gold and lumber, and take them home with them.
not to mention they sometimes overstay their welcome
I suspect that the real reason was "Because it was funnier that way".
