Subject: Belfast Meet?

So, we'd been discussing a Belfast Meet this summer, and I think it's high time to get planning!

Who would be interested, when would suit best, and which activities shall we offer?

We had more or less agreed that a wander round the Botanic Gardens and Ulster Museum would be a good (free) activity for Meet day - but there's also the idea of combining it with a hike up through Glenariff. (It's exactly 42 km cool ) Though non-walkers could simply drive up and meet us by the waterfalls for lunch... Might have to be a two-day Meet!

I'd love to, and might be tempted to bring Vera and spread it over 4 days, if someone could suggest 'safe' Folkie pubs for a 'Londoner'.

However August would Not be a good month, as at a Folk Festival 9th to 19th, and work may get upset!!!

July would suit me better than August, as I intend to be away for two of the four weeks in August.

'fraid your gentle walk would be a non-starter for me though, but the Triffid walk is ok...

That's why I'd be reluctant to make it the main event, less inclusive that way!

I'll be away at the Discworld Con for part of August. If it doesn't clash with that, I'd definitely come to a Belfast meet. I might even splash out, travel in comfort, and take the train instead of the bus.

I think combining a walk like that with a Belfast meet would be biting off more than you can chew to be honest - you'd just end up with people spread out over a massive area in different cars, buses, museums and up the Glens of Antrim with not much actual "meet"-ing happening.laugh

I haven't told anyone this yet, but we are seriously planning coming to Ireland for our holiday this year, having put it off a few years ago because my father died.

The plan was to start with a few days in Dublin, then spend a week or so looking at countryside and coast (not decided where, yet), and finish up in Belfast, preferably meeting some of you there. We shall be returning around 20th July - we have to be back for a family do on the 21st.

Pencil me in between 9 and 20 July*. And we'd love to join a walk, but not one of your marathon hikes (hubby could do it, but I'm not sure about myself)

*Oh dear. That includes the 12th.

Whatever you do, please decide nice and early on a date (we're not getting anywhere this year with a German date), in case it affects which flights I need to book.

cool That would be good!

And I think you're right, KB, we need to split it into two meets, a hiking meet and a meet meet.

Fortunately, the 12th weekend means extra days off, so we could go hiking then, well away from any towns. winkeye

July would be good. Sooner the date is fixed the better. ok
Shame Germany won't happen though, TC. So meeting you in Ireland would be good. And you, Mal. But a hike is definitely out. I'll grab my fiddle and find a pub, if you don't mind.

There's no way I'll be hiking 42km. The most I've ever done, when I was young and fit, was about 20km.

A gig in June? Tell me more!

I could do 42km, but over a fortnight if level ground, or 4 weeks if lumpy!!!

But I'm interested in the meet. I should finally know when I want holidays anyhow. I would not be able to come between 16th July and 8th August because of cat and house sitting duties.

That's the only weekend I'll be on the island. But I'm on holiday, so I can even do midweek.
