Is Roy Hodgson really a big enough 'name' to make a credible England manager?
Yes.
The problem is, England aren't credible.

Roy Hodgson managing a distinctly average team who were last any good decades ago, and whose fans have delusions of grandeur?
Deja vu or what?
Well qualified then.
Which is probably what England won't be.

Ooh - you took that too far
For the Englishes that might not get the reference - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RD89wjUQZCw

Only to the first round, if I know my ancient history/
Aye, but we ken we're pish. Some Englishes think they need a superstar "name" to lead their team of souperstars.
Being serious for a second - you don't want a media personality to run your national team, you need a tactician who can communicate his instructions clearly to some not very bright people. The ability to massage massive egos is a bonus. Why on earth Harry "Dodgy geezer" Redknapp was ever in the frame beggars belief.

Because 'Appy 'Arry's been buttering up Fleet Street for years. It's why he's so well regarded despite being a shite manager.

I was always puzzled as to why Roy Hodgson wasn't seriously considered earlier in this process, and in earlier selection processes. He's got experience at managing national teams, which seems to me to be fairly obviously different to managing club sides. No transfer market, little day-to-day contact with the players, little chance for players from different clubs to build familiarity and understanding with their team mates and the overall system or systems that the team will play.
As swl so eloquently and rightly said.... England aren't very good. They just don't have that many good players to choose from, and probably only one world class player in Rooney. Or at least nowhere near as good as the hype. I really wish we could accept it, and be happy with punching our weight, and delighted at punching above it. I'd back Hodgson over Redknapp in terms of getting players well drilled and playing to a system, and making the most of what we have available.
Problem is.... as someone very aptly put it, Hodgson's a broadsheet manager in a tabloid world. He doesn't have Redknapp's teflon coating and free pass with the media, and I worry that he's going to get slaughtered....

He's a big enough name.
I think the FA have done the right thing. They're not spending a fortune buying a big name out of his contract. Hodgson is a quiet behind-the-scenes man-manager who understands how to lead a team. And teamwork has been the major thing lacking from England for the last ten years.

Hodgson is the right man for the job, sadly England aren't the right team or supporters for the manager. I like Hodgson a lot but England are an awful team with a deluded sense of entitlement and the fans take this delusion even further. After his experience with a similar combination of losers and lunatics at Liverpool, I'm surprised Hodgson took the job and I hope it goes well for him.
If it'd had been 'Arry we'd have found out whether it was possible to bankrupt a national team.

And he got Switzerland up to number 3 in the world at one point... can't be all bad.
As with many other of our sportsmen/sports associated men - he is very well regarded abroad but not so much here.
Having said all that - is it actually possible for an England manager to live up to the expectation? Naah.

Venables. If there's one man in world football I hate above all others, it's that man.
Then Ken Bates second.

You can't hate EVERYONE who's scored against Scotland, you know.
It would take far too long.
