He's quite a well known face, I've seen him all over the place.
Usually a jobbing bit part player though to be fair. I didn't know his name until now.

>>Book 5 spoilers? Are you taking the piss?<<
I wasn't but it doesn't matter now anyway as the series has moved away from what I described in a big way and Osha (and possibly Rickon/Luwin) is going to have a different arc on TV than on paper. The events of this weeks episode made that almost inevitable.
I'm finding it really hard to judge individual episodes right now because it's not like the story is being structured around the hour, or around specific themes/events, instead it's one long story that's just being doled out slowly. I don't mean that as a criticism - the attempts to make it ore episodic such at the cliffhangers with Jon Snow and Daenerys have fallen flat for me.
Instead I've found myself judging individual performances and it's interesting how the least likeable characters are putting in some of the best performances: Joffrey and Theon stand out in that regard. Maisie Williams continues to astound and I found myself laughing out loud with what happened to Lorch - something that doesn't happen very often - and I'm loving Natalie Tena as Osha. Sad the Reeds don't seem to be showing up but Osha can fill the gap.

>>>Book 5 spoilers? Are you taking the piss?<<<
Well I have said several times in this thread that I'm *currently* reading book 5 so that wasn't really appreciated. Fortunately I avoided reading most of what you posted.
Also, we've been asked to take discussion of the books away from this thread, which I approve of.
Anyway, I and many others currently work with several people who share the same name, let alone a similar one and we all manage to cope.

So what's it all about? What can you compare it to? Will I like it? Should I rush out and get the first season? Btw, I've skipped straight here to avoid 'spoilers'.

PS. Is it really an 18? If so, why?
It contains LOTS of sex and violence. Some of the weekly TV reviews have a regular "score" count of how much of both of those go on.
It's very confusing, so maybe would be worth watching series one first. Though it's so confusing that that might only be a little help, and you might as well just dive in without worrying too much about the detailed plot.

Is it really that complicated?
I have trouble working out whether it is or not because I have read the books and these have detailed tables of genealogy at the back (who is who, who is sworn to who etc). Which help a lot. I know the books are *very* complicated in this regard and you do need to swat up a bit every now and then to keep up.
They've toned this down a lot in the series I think but yes, I guess it's not a surprise it's regarded as complicated.
If you want my advice Pegasus, go read the books - although you'll need a strong stomach at times. If the TV series is 18 then the books are double. If you don't fancy 2000+ pages so far though then definitely start at series 1, episode 1. You won't have a scooby whose who if you start now and I doubt you'd get much out of it personally.

Thanks both.
Ace again.
So Tywin then, does he actually know she is Arya, or is he just on to the fact there is more to her than he knows yet?
Also good to see the King Slayer featured a bit more.
Warming up nicely, but are there really only three more before we have another year to wait? Boo!

>So Tywin then, does he actually know she is Arya, or is he just on to the fact there is more to her than he knows yet?<
Well those of us in the know ( )... do not know .... seeing as Harrenhal never saw Tywin Lannister in the book iirc. It was Roose Bolton who she was cup-bearer for there.
So you'll have to watch and find out.
They've made Harrenhal's history more impressive in the series also. It was built as a bit of folly in the book - the lord who built was overambitious and could never fully use it or keep it up, so it just gradually fell into ruin. Kind of like Blenheim Palace or Caerphilly castle in a way. Nowhere near so grand as getting firebombed by dragons as we were told last night.
Mentioning the books - I have been guilty of whinging about how long they've taken to write - particularly the last one. Since I'm now about 3/4 through Dance with Dragons I'd like, for the record, to now say - the wait was worth it. Even without having finished it yet it's one of the better ones - possibly the best since Clash of Kings (the current series being shown). Definitely worth the wait.

If they did an episode that was just Tywin and Arya, I'd be perfectly happy: the pair of them are just incredible. I think Tywin realises she's a northern noble (maybe one of the Mormont she-bears) but if he realised she was Arya Stark he'd have sent her off to Kings Landing. At first I thought the meal she was serving Tywin was poisoned, hence her reluctance to have any. Humanising Tywin has been a great achievement.
Amidst all the blood and gore, the sex and violence, this episode had the first truly shocking moment: Cersei breaking down in front of Tyrion. I didn't see that coming. Tyrion's reaction to it was wonderful, really showing the warmth he has for his family. It's one of the great what ifs of the story - what if the other Lannisters actually paid attention to what Tyrion was trying to do for them all.
This was probably my favourite episode this series: it was exceptional.

Daenarys has been a bit disappointing though. Going from the blood and fire thing, to having to beg others for food and shelters. I guess she will turn around later.

The Dany plot has diverged from the books. Insofar as there is now a Dany plot.

Incidentally, what does "Ser" mean? Is is their version of Sir, or an actual name?
@ Xan: The former. There are a few random tweaks in the series which differentiate it from ordinary terrestrial heraldry. Another is that reigning monarchs are called "Your Grace" and not "Your Majesty".
I agree that it was a top episode. As I posted on FB, every time the Lannisters get deeper, they get more fascinating. Incidentally, I don't think Tywin knows about Arya. He is ruthless practicality personified, and there's no way he would refrain from taking her in hand. I am pretty sure I remember something about Harrenhal being conquered using dragon fire in the book, although they've downplayed the obstacles to defending it in the TV series.

Your Grace was the honorific to Kings here until Edward III (iirc). The your magnificence, majesty etc. were eastern things from Byzantium and the eastern potentates. In the Ice and Fire novels these honorifics do exist - in the eastern potentats of the free cities such as Qaarth, Volantis, Mereen etc.
So you can date their heraldry to late middle ages if you like
I'm pretty well in mourning that we only have two more episodes. Obviously a lot of getting the various ducks in line for the big finale stuff but very enjoyable nonetheless. I loved the stuff with Arya and Jaquen again.
And the scene with Theon and his sister was good too.
Interesting times are coming.

I was stunned to discover that my other half thinks that Theon's sister is the arse and not him before yesterday's episode. Hopefully last night will have changed that.
Is it me or were Daenaerys' scenes last night pointless?

I'll keep this as vague as possible to avoid spoilers, but there's something I need to get off my chest about Dany.
Her enand Feast for Crows is entirely superfluous to the plot of the novels, is dull as dishwater, and serves little to no purpose.
The sad fact is that the only redeeming feature of the otherwise water-treading Feast for Crows is that George Martin decided to not give us any Dany chapters.

"Her enand Feast for Crows"
Bad editing.
Should read "Her arc in Clash of Kings and Storm of Swords"
