a little old and analysis rather than news, but . . .
' . . . And this, my friends, is what white privilege is all about. The ability to threaten others, to engage in violent and incendiary rhetoric without consequence, to be viewed as patriotic and normal no matter what you do, and never to be feared and despised as people of color would be, if they tried to get away with half the shit we do, on a daily basis.'

Anhaga: you could also replace white with religious and coloured with 'atheist/secular' and you'd have my feelings on that subject too.
' . . . And this, my friends, is what religious privilege is all about. The ability to threaten others, to engage in violent and incendiary rhetoric without consequence, to be viewed as 'moral' and normal no matter what you do, and never to be feared and despised as people of 'no belief' would be, if they tried to get away with half the shit the religious do, on a daily basis.'

I'm completely with you 3dots, except I would put the word "religious" in inverted commas. It's a very subjective term.

In other news:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/scotland/south_scotland/10450556.stm
The UK Supreme Court has ruled that British troops are not protected by human rights laws on the battlefield.
If I were forced to take sides on this, I'm not sure where I'd land. But it does seem to open up a raft of possibilities. Given the horrendous treatment of military personnel in cases like Deepcut, does this mean that any protection soldiers might have just vanishes as soon as they're in a "combat situation" however loosely that may be defined. That seems a bit scary!

I find the substitution experiment is very useful (black for white, etc.) I first became conscious of the need for it immediately after the Montreal Massacre A2225639 , when there was a tendency for people to say, 'Oh, it was just a crazy guy, not about violence against women'. I would reply, 'If he had killed 14 Jews while shouting that Jews had ruined his life, would you say it had nothing to do with anti-Semitism?'
On another subject, our Truth and Reconciliation Commission rolls on, reaching back a century and more to help bring us to peace:
'The names of more than 300 children who attended a central Alberta residential school were read out at a remembrance ceremony Wednesday on the banks of the Red Deer River.
The students — who came from Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan —attended the Methodist-run Red Deer Industrial School between 1893 and 1919. Some of the names that were read were of students who were buried at a nearby cemetery.'

Not to belittle your well made point but the old 'black/white' or 'ying/yang' or 'two sides to every story' examination is probably insufficient to a full understanding and full disclosure of the complexity of generalising hatred because of repeated offense taken from any number of individual members of an identifiable group.
Even if we allow that he could as easily have substituted Jews in his monstrous personal tragedy it still does not seem proper to extend his hatred to all Jews or to all women.
Only when a group acts badly in an official way as a group and in the name of that group (like say, the state of Israel's policies against Palestinians) can we properly extend our hatred to all of them. A bad run of luck in meeting up with a series of offensive individuals from any distinctive group just not justify murdering even a dozen of them.
And any killer who feels the need to explain his actions is hardly a good example of sound thinking.

well, I *was* commenting on my previous link about the tea-bagging party in the U.S. and how the inversion experiment can be helpful in getting a realistic handle on what's going on.
But you knew that.

"Only when a group acts badly in an official way as a group and in the name of that group (like say, the state of Israel's policies against Palestinians) can we properly extend our hatred to all of them"
You're saying we should hate all Israeli's because of the way their government acts. That's a bit alarming!! So should we even hate the Arab and Christian Israeli's? Do you believe that every Israeli man, woman and child agrees with the government of Israel's action in and toward Palestine?

Maggots in luggage locker delay US flight in Atlanta!
I love the quote from one passenger - "And as they're telling us to stay calm and seated, I see a maggot looking back at me and I'm thinking, 'These are anaerobic, flesh-eating larvae that the flight attendants don't have to sit with.'"

'BP Spill Hits A Somber Record As Gulf's Biggest'
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=127901771
But what's really interesting about this particular story is that most of the pictures captions as depicting various crew members of an oil skimming ship actually are pictures of Jimmy Buffet on stage.
I expect they'll fix this soon.
how very odd. Maybe he's singing the oil away or something?

The pictures are from a concert he gave recently in the spill region. What I find particularly odd is that none of the comments mention the pictures.
