(Name that tune, anyone?)
Well, today actually. My pulse speeded up a bit when I came home and found a little brown envelope with "Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs" waiting for me. I torep it open nervously...and found that they want to give me a wee sum of money because they took too much tax off me in 2007. Not enough to put me on the Sunday Times Rich List or anything, but equal to a few weeks' shopping, say.
This has been a really nice, successful week all-round! Even w*rk has been pretty cool - I've started on some really fun, meaty projects and the bane of my life is on holiday. And I scored one of those minor victories that make union work worth all the hassle.
Even the Tory on Question Time couldn't ruin the mojo.
Told ya good karma would rebound to you

Indeed you did!
But if it's karma, that means I'll...have to start being *nice* to people! <gasp>
<gasp> indeed! The horror!
Do you need practice?
TRiG.

I don't know whether it was the offer of practice being nice to people, or the coy little wink, but I'm....79% sure you didn't mean that the way I took it, big boy!
Note to self: Guard more carefully against unintentional innuendo.

Incidentally, I met Massive Attack once in a pub on the Triangle in Bristol. Really nice blokes. 3D is a huge' scary looking black guy, but he is a real softy with a proper Bristol accent.

I don't know, do you get a prize for this?
Take a prize if you want one.

Eh?
Now the feckers have come back to me and said that since I was doing two jobs at the same time, I got more tax allowances than I was entitled to, so I owe them just under £1000.
Except I *wasnt* doing two jobs at the same time, I only had one.
That's a kick in a sensitive place, KB - I hope there is scope for an appeal. Can they just deduct the money somewhere or do you actively have to pay it to them?

I'm fairly hopeful I can get it cleared up. It'll just take a bit of pestering HR people, which can be a bit of a Kafka experience at the best of times...
What happened was I changed jobs halfway through the year, but they seem to think I earned the full annual salary for each job, rather than six months in each. Or something.
Hell, they don't know me very well, do they? Having one job at a time is bad enough!

Oh dear. Well, I got all the documentation I need and went to the Post Office. Printed off the postage...and discovered it shows a fat pig with its snout in the trough.

Soooo they've got back to me and admitted that no, I don't owe them £1000. But they don't know how much they owe me, or I owe them, or anything else: I now have to "await their new calculations".
They'd be better looking into the tax affairs of one or two leading cabinet members than devoting all this time to whatever pittance they hope to milk out of me, but anyway...
Yay! - Are you buying drinks?
