If you're driving from Alberta through to Vancouver, you're welcome to overnight here at the 'ranch'
Trust me, you'll need a break
Then I would be honoured to escort you over the infamous Hope/Princeton highway
Even if you decide to drive straight on, I'd be happy to tag along, and help you through the really twisty bits!
And then it's party time in Vancouver, along with my fellow BC'er, cl zoomer
~waves~ to cl zoomer
Oh, and of course I'll bring along some world famous local
I'll email the directions and details...
Faberoos! We welcome company in the Van, and 'specialy welcome local knowledge. I suspect that the mountain roads will shock Tony; I spent a couple of days driving in the Snowys in Australia, and even so I think they will probably shock me too.
Looks like it will be a good party in Vancouver!

That sounds great! What did we plan for the Edmonton-Vancouver stretch, Ben, about 3 days? I believe we were thinking of a route that goes through "Salmon Arm"; that name stuck with me. It's all open to revision of course. You know the way much better than we do.

Salmon Arm!!!
I lived in Salmon Arm when I was vewy vewy little
That route would take you through Kamloops, quite possibly the most red neck center of BC.. <nonexistantrednecksmiley>
Then you would likely drive south west on highway 5 (the Coquihalla). I would advise against this, as it is a T(r)oll highway!!
To get to 'The Ranch', you turn south at Sicamous, a charming town a few kilometers North East of Salmon Arm. Highway 97 South meanders thence through Enderby, (another charming village!); Vernon, (the Blues capital of BC's southern interior ; Kelowna, (the yuppie capital of BC) ; Peachland, (very sweet!) ; Summerland, (very hot) ; Penticton, (laid back and very friendly ), then due west on highway 3a and 3.
This route is not really much longer than the Coquihalla route, and much more scenic, imho
From Edmonton, if you have time, I suggest you drive highway 16 west, --Alberta drivers go insanely fast on this freeway ,-- then take highway 93 south from Jasper to Banff. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking. You'll want to take turns driving. And keep a wary eye out for elk, moose, and bighorn sheep, not to mention awe-struck drivers of other vehicles... No, really, if you like mountains, you won't want to miss the Jasper/Banff route. Twisty, though.
You may not want to go to Banff city itself, so you could turn west at Lake Louise, (in Banff National Park), and drive through Yoho National Park. Thence through Golden, Revelstoke, and then turn south, as I say, at Sicamous.
I'm preparing to email you detailed directions/maps etc. I can also recommend some places to eat/sleep/fill up the tank, as I am quite familiar with the journey from southern Saskatchewan through to Vancouver.
Which reminds me of a story of a US man and his wife, on a driving tour through Canada. While driving in a town, they suspected they had made a wrong turn, so they pulled over to the curb and asked a gentleman where they were. He replied, "Saskatoon, Saskatchewan." The husband turned to his wife and said, "We're lost, alright. They don't even speak English here!"
Thanks so much - we need all the help and advice we can get! And can you really join us?

My pleasure My pleasure Yes Yes
It's been some time since I drove through Quebec. If you visit Quebec city, note that the city planners have a charming habit of suddenly changing street names, depending on which area you happen to be driving through. A guide is almost essential. Are you listening, ~jwf~? Quebec motorists are very, ah, 'competitive'
Ontario is fairly straightforward. I'm sure Ausnahmsweise, and Gordon the Scout will provide invaluable assistance I suggest you avoid driving through Tarana, (Toronto), during rush hour -- basically anytime from 4 am to 1 am. Tarantonians do not have time to give anyone directions. Conversely, Ottawa is almost as friendly as --
Winnipeg, Manitoba... Arguably the friendliest city in the friendliest province. Belle will likely meet you at the border, with and !
The Dragonlady, (*love* that name!!), can probably give you good road info for Saskatchewan. I travelled mainly in the southern parts, around Cypress Hills. Beautiful, weird landscape, absolutely terrible road surfaces. I think the gophers there have highly organized teams of pavement demolition experts...
Similarly, jazzedupcurry can give you the lowdown on Alberta routes/places...
Once you cross into BC, you are *mine*.. Muah, ha, haaa At least as far as Vancouver, at which time cl zoomer can take the con.
I don't know if I'll ride along with you, or 'convoy' with you, but for sure I'll join you for at least part of your Pacific Northwest adventure.
The route suggested would only add an hour or two at most to your journey and it is much more scenic. I am of a mind the the trip is the point much more than the destination. I only wish you could stop in Osoyoos so you could sample the wine, the desert, and the desserts.
Keep in touch, and
ps- Taliesen, good thing you didn't mention the biggest cash crop of your area (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)
