question please, lab wise, are you based at Hull Royal or De La Pole ?? plus is it a 7 day week type shift job(Yorkshire nosiness )
Sorry - only just noticed this message hiding here...
Hull Royal.
Work 8.30 - 5.00 Monday to Friday, on a flexi time system - if I build up a bit of extra time, I can take it off later...
They like us to work weekends on a rota, but I tend to give mine away - it gives me more time with the family, and working extras tends to muck up my family credit.
cheers mate once spent a while at De La Pole in 1967, operation on spine
is it patient orientated tests you do, or general bacteria stuff
Up until a month ago we tested both clinical specimens, and food and environmental. For example - ever had an Aunt Bessie Yorkshire pudding? We did all the QC work for them. Every batch that was produced, we tested a sample before they went out. And yes, they *are* good stuff! We also tested water supplies for bacteria, and especially legionella.
Now though that has been dropped, and we are simply a clinical laboratory, testing specimens from local hospitals and GPs, everything from sputum to poo, toe-nail clippings to corneal scrapings, throat swabs to erm... sexual health swabs... all good variety!
definitely makes for an interesting day is it a large team you have
(you make me sound like I'm in charge!!)
It felt like it today! Since the Foods & Environmental section closed, the clinical lab has gained about 6 extra staff - which, because of previous posts the cash-strapped trust never filled, means we are now staffed as we should be - there's about 40 of us in total, 25 based here, and 15 or so in the Virus lab at Castle Hill Hospital on the outskirts of town.
Some days (like today) there's not many samples coming in, so we were all sat round looking for random people to drag in and test (only joking!), but other days it is chaotic. Summer holidays give us an increase in sexual health swabs (people coming back off holiday with a suspicious rash!), and poo samples (badly cooked barbecues)... Winter brings samples from people with colds and chest infections... and, incidentally, the biochemisty lab over the way notes that a month after every power cut, there is an increase in requests for pregnancy tests...
I can picture the trends at various times of the year and at the same time various staff phoning in sick
always wanted to know why turds are called stools??
Good question - it *does* cause confusion...
I answered the phone in the lab once, and an old sounding gentleman was there...
"I have an upset stomach, and my doctor said I need to take a stool to the laboratory. I haven't got a stool, would a kitchen chair be alright?" - it turns out he thought we carried out tests *on him* at the lab, and needed him to bring something to sit on!!
"No, he means you need to bring in a sample of faeces..." - "....?" "Poo!" - "...Ahhhhhhh!!! Oh....... oh dear.... I guess you must think I'm a bit stupid?" "No, don't worry, you'd be surprised how many people make that mistake..."
It was about 2 minutes before I could get up off the floor and stop laughing after that.
it sounds better I'm ex tv engineer(early 70's) and some of the stories I got from customers, like you
day shift at work 6 to 2, because I was on the effluent plant(it run automatically)I took readings at 6.00am, then set my watch alarm for 7.00am and head down on desk snaptime was 45mins, but me and the guys on a plant next to me, had 2 snaps 8.00-9.15, then till 10.00am from canteen in to bosses office for cig and coffee , go do a bit more, then clock off at 2pm.
afternoon shift 2 to 10 bosses office till 4.30pm, then canteen for snap again, two breaks 6pm did a few jobs around plant, 7pm shouted over to tea cabin of the other plant and then game of cards until they went at 8.30pm, a few more jobs, then early shower, to clock off at 10pm
