Hello WebWitch and welcome to h2g2 smiley
I´m your sub for Ásatrú and I´m really looking forward to tackling it. I´ll start off by mentioning that I am Icelandic and therefore have excellent access to sources on Ásatrú, apart from having studied it in history, literature and religious studies.
The first thing I´ve noticed I´d like to change is the name of the Entry. I don´t think 'teutonic' is accurate enough and I´d like to change that to 'norse' and something or other.
While I´m subbing and when I finish, I´ll keep you posted and you´ll get to comment and nag smiley before I send it off...

Hi! Glad to "meet" you smiley

I'm concerned that 'Norse' makes it sound purely Scandinavian - perhaps 'Norse and Teutonic' would be more inclusive?

I'm looking forward to working with you smiley

I've just reread it, and made 3 changes:

* Added a footnote explaining that in America the term 'Odinism' is generally accepted as a coded term for racist ideology

* Changed the sentence "rely on contemporary literature, anthropology, and academic historians" to "rely on contemporary literature, anthropology, and academic history texts"

* Rectified the spelling of Freo to Frea (makes a big gender difference, doesn't it!!)

Hope this fits in with the sub-editing process - actually, if you could explain exactly how we work together (i.e. do I run any changes past you first, or do I make them and then notify you, or what?), I'd be deeply grateful; the official explaination talks about working together but doesn't share the actual procedure (at least not to my eyes).

Ta smiley

Nice to meet you too smiley (and I do hope your health is getting better angel

Any changes you make are merely to your copy from now on - I have another copy to work on. I´ll make the same changes you have while I sub it.
The subbing works like this: I read everything, change stuff so that it is in BE rather than AE and make sure everything is according to the guidelines. I may make more major changes, but I´ll (can´t speak for other subs, but they´re reasonable people) pass them by you before sending stuff off. Once I´ve sent stuff off, hopefully without errors, I can only change stuff by letting the Italics know and have them do it.
If you don´t like what I (or anyone else) have done to your work, let us or the Italics know. For the most part we do take the authors ideas into consideration, but if the italics say something goes, that´s how it goes.
Hopefully I´ll have more time later this week to do my subbing and I´ll let you know how that goes smiley

oh, my deity of choice!

While getting on with my life and doing stuff, I´ve completely managed to ignore this nagging little voice in my head, saying how I needed to do what´s right and finish subbing your entry. My powers of self-delusion are apparently great, since I´ve ignored my conscience for this long, and long it is!

I´m very sorry for this, I really am.
I do hope you´ll forgive me<tear>
<sniff sniff, pretty pretty please>

Ok, back to business:
You state that Vikings were not fatalists - this directly contravenes their belief in Urdur, Verdandi and Skuld, the three Witches of Destinies, whose weaving encompasses all human life, and predetermines their fates. The witches weave a general path, how you get through it is up to you. The weave is tangled and often difficult to discern, the witches can be bribed or threatened by a brave soul who finds them at the root of Askur Yggdrasill - what is your take on this?

I was having some problems yesterday with the computer system so I couldn´t update your entry personally so i had to send it back as a note-pad document to the Italics. They´ve updated it, and I´ve commented on it in an e-mail, so it´s not finished 100%
Please go there, A918452, and see how it looks and whether you approve. Then come back here and tell me if it´s ok or if you want to change something and I´ll then tell the Italics.

I hope your glandular fever is better and that you´re enjoying your h2g2 experience smiley

Re: Editing: Not to worry smiley

Re: Glandular fever: Getting better, though prone to bouts of fuzzines. I'm not sure if people have noticed, though, as fuzziness seems to occur as part of my normal existence winkeye

Re: Fatalism: I understand fatalism to be the concept that fate is fixed and that nothing can be done about it. My understanding of the Vikings is that they believed in fate, but also believed that while the general path of a person's life was pretty much laid out in front of them, they could tweak the particulars of that life through personal behaviour and engagement with a variety of entities, especially the Norns and Odin - sometimes, even to the degree that the path of their life might diverge from its set run for a short while. So my understanding is that they weren't fatalists, because they believed that fate might be changed to varying degrees. What's your take?

ah, my dear old friend the fuzziness. I´m quite familiar with its borther, dizzyness, these days. Lovely, really cheers

re: fatalism. I think maybe we think of the vikings in the same way, as having the nerve not to live and die according to their 'fate'.
Then again, maybe that´s just me, enjoying my non-fate...

Funnily enough, if you go to my user space and click on one of my entries that´s now in PeerReview, you´ll see stuff about genealogy and icelanders. Your entry was in part the start of that, so thanks smiley I´ve looked myself up in the database I wrote about and it turns out that I can trace my lineage back to a lot of the names you mentioned... (of course, most icelanders can) Queen Aud is one, Snorri Sturluson another. Just thought that was funny biggrin

Re: Yes, I think that fatalism indicates a resignation to one's absolute set fate, whereas the Vikings seemed (in my understanding) to be neither resigned nor convinced that fate could not be in some ways changed or improved.

Re: genealogy: Very cool indeed! smiley My father's got one part of the family back to the 15th century - none of them were even vaguely famous. We're a famously not famous family winkeye

Anyway, now we seem to be on the same page about the fate thing, how is it going?

Well, I stopped worrying about this ages ago ok
I didn´t really change anything significant, or add anything to your entry, although I cut a few things as I felt they sort of interrupted the flow of things. So now it´s all queued up and can be seen from the ComingUp page...

Hey smiley

I do like the flow better, though I do have a couple of nit-picky things:

* Could you reinstate the footnote about Odinism being a coded term in America for racist philosophy? Just so people know what to expect if they do a websearch...

* In the sentence "We cannot be sure how precise a reflection of general beliefs and customs of the ancient Scandinavians and Germans, the Sagas and Eddas give us" the comma after "Germans" isn't needed - it's probably from one of the bits you cut.

* In the sentence "Those who are of Asatru, hereon referred to as Asatruar(pronounced 'asa-true-ar')", there's no space between the word Asatruar and the brackets; also, shouldn't it be hereafter rather than hereon? Just checking.

* "Reverence for their ancestors and familial spirits, such as the Disir (pronounced 'dis-ear', the singular, Dis, means goddess), the female ancestors who protect the family, are an important part of Asatruar beliefs." might read better if it were "Reverence for ancestors and familial spirits" - the "their" doesn't really go with the revised version.

* "The subject of magic is another dividing line between many Asatruar and Wiccans." Does this seem redundant to you in the context of the paragraph? Just a thought.

Oops! Hit "post" by accident before I was done!!

* "Christian identity" is "Christian Identity" with a capital I - it's a racist movement in America that purports to be solidly Biblically based.

* "folksy" originally read "folkish" as this is the coded term used by Asatruar in America to indicate that they are concerned with ethnicity (and often sexual orientation).

* While there are some people who argue that the terms Pagan and Heathen should not be written with capitalised first letters, to use lower-case makes most Pagans and Heathens very uncomfortable; they point out that accepted religions are usually written with a capital first letter. Most Neopagans don't hyphenate the term.

Hope you don't think I'm ragging hard on you - I'm actually very happy with what you've done overall, and it's just these few bits and pieces I'd like to see changed. Let me know what you think.

Hello WebWitch,

Anna here smiley I've done most of those changes, but wanted to ask you about the capitalisation of Pagan and Heathen. It was me who changed pagan and heathen to lowercase - the reason I did this was that we stick to the Oxford English Dictionary for style and it has both of those as lowercase...

Anna
