The Met Police have today announced a great, fantastic, brilliant idea for tackling the problem of being institutionally racist. They are going to be... racist!
It's a brilliant idea to pay bobbies money for every ethnic minority that they encourage to join the police force. Naturally, they'll also be paid for every person from an ethnic majority that they recr...
*whisper off-stage*
<whisper> What, they won't? Oh... but isn't that a bit... You know. Oh right, it's ok to discriminate against majorities but not minorities. I see. </whisper>
On a similar note, both the LibDems and Labour have introduced all-women shortlists when electing who should stand for them in Parliamentry elections. But it's ok, it aims to 'redress the balance' (their words, not mine) and after all it discriminates against men, not women, so that's all right then.
It all started with the Krypton Factor in which they always gave the porky-kneed granny a bit of a headstart.
However, they never gave the intellectually-challeged montego-driving WASP salesman from Middlesex any assistance in the mental agility task. Like completing 9 out of 10 bits of the puzzle in advance.

When I read your subject heading, I thought you were going to stir up pudding again.
On to your topic though, wouldn't it be great if we could employ people purely on the basis of who can do the job best? I think so.
Absolutely. As Martin Luther King once said "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character." Policies like this do just the opposite sadly, despite their good intentions. Oberon2001

Do you think it would help the race situation if we genetically altered every embryo so that the children of the future were born blind? I know that sounds cruel but I used to wish it when I first started secondary school and everybody laughed at my voice. But I decided in the end just to wait for it all to blow over. Which it did. I fear that this situation wil not go away so easily.
No, children would just find some other way to mock and humiliate each other. They can be a cruel species.
If there's no one they can tease because they're different they'll make someone different then tease them.... it's an instinctual thing I guess...

People feel so scared that all their efforts to be cool are being wasted and that they'll find out one day they're not so good after all that they rip it out of everybody who they consider to be inferior to make themselves feel better about themselves. The trouble is, lots of people buckle under the pressure and find themselves wishing they were more popular-even me, on occasion. But if you stand your ground and learn to give as good as you get then you see these tormentors as they are: A bunch of worthless maggots. I know that that sounds harsh but it's true.
It's funny isn't it. You spend all those years at school trying to fit in, and hoping everyone likes you. Then ten years down the track you don't see any of those people anymore and none of it matters.
I'm through trying to fit in. If people don't like me, big deal.
Getting back to the subject of +ve discrimination, is Annika Sorenstam playing off the same tees as the men, or is she playing of the ladies' tees?

No idea. I haven't got the faintest clue about Golf- I once heard it described as "A good walk spoilt".
I think she's playing the same course as the men (same tees, etc) Oberon2001
It'll be great for anti-sexism if she wins!
Most of the bullying I've experienced was done by people who either are in or have been in a lot of pain, or people who are spoilt rotten... either way I forgive them - they're only human.
If she's off the men's tees then I fully support Sorenstam's efforts.
The problem I see is as follows:
By playing, she is perhaps denying a place in the draw for a male professional. As a result, his way of making a living has been compromised. However, he cannot take part in the Ladies competition (which Sorenstam is missing) to compensate for his loss. However, Sorenstam's absence from the LPGA event means that a woman who would not normally have expected to play is playing.
the point about sport is to see whos the best... and she's practically the first woman to compete with the best. I think a sportsperson would be insulted if someone considered their situation a factor in deciding whether they compete with the best, rather then their skill.

If you feel that it would make a valuable contribution to your good mood, then by all means please do.

Hmmm, that's a bit rough. This would tend to preclude women from most Olympic track and field events as men seem to have, what, 10% better performance across the whole thing. In fact, I can't think of anywhere where women would get past the heats, let alone get on the podium.
However, there are sports where gender plays less of a part. Snooker and Darts (albeit unOlympic) are two events where women shoudl be able to compete "on a par", but seemingly don't.
Golf seems to be a grey area. Club selection, and stroke are surely skill rather than strength. But very few women are going to compete with the top men for distance off the tee.
