What's my Personal Space for?

Your Personal Space is the nerve centre of your activity on h2g2. It's the place you can customise to tell the world as much about yourself as you want to, it's where you can add to the Guide, where you can keep track of your Conversations, and where you can keep a Journal.

As the most useful page you have on h2g2, it's worth spending a bit of time exploring your Personal Space so you can get the best from h2g2.

To get to your Personal Space, simply click the 'My Space' button at any time. If you aren't currently registered on your machine, then you can't access your Personal Space and you should either register, or log in if you have already registered.

What's in my Personal Space?

Your Personal Space has a number of really useful sections:

  • Your Introduction ('About Me')
When you first go to your Personal Space there's a standard Introduction at the top of the page that basically says that you haven't written anything yet. One of the first things you'll want to do is change your Introduction to something you've written yourself. To do this simply click the 'Edit Page' button and type in your new Introduction. Please note that in Brunel, if you visit other people's Spaces their Introduction lives at the top of the page, but if you visit your own, it's at the bottom, as we presume you don't always want to read about you!

  • My Journal
This is where your Journal appears. For more information on your Journal click here.

  • My Conversations
This section displays details of any Postings you make to Conversations on any DNA sites (including h2g2). For more information on your Conversations section click here.

  • My Guide Entries
Whenever you write a Guide Entry it will appear here. For more information on your Guide Entries section click here.

  • My Edited Guide Entries
If one of your entries has been incorporated into the Edited Guide, or you have contributed to an Edited Entry in some other way, then the details will appear here. For more information on your Edited Guide Entries section click here.

There's also a box to the right of your Space. This contains information about you, and is described here.

What's the Journal section all about?

This is where your Journal appears. Your Journal is a bit like a diary: each entry is associated with a specific time (the time you posted it), and you can use your Journal to jot down thoughts and opinions as they occur to you. Other Researchers can discuss your Journal and it's a great way to talk about things that aren't necessarily suited to a full Guide Entry.

In technical terms your Journal is actually a Conversation Forum, with each entry in your Journal acting like the first Posting in a new Conversation. This is why your Journal can only be written in plain text, not GuideML.

For more information on your Journal, click here.

What's the Conversations section all about?

This section displays details of any Conversations you contribute to on any DNA sites (you can find out more about the DNA system here). This is really useful: by checking out this section you can keep track of Conversations you are involved in and can see if anyone has replied to your Postings, and when. For more information about h2g2 Conversations and how to get the best from them, click here.

What's the Guide Entries section all about?

Whenever you write a Guide Entry it will appear here, and if you ever want to edit one of your Guide Entries you can do so here by clicking on the 'Edit' link next to that entry's name. Alternatively, you can go along to the entry in question and click on the 'Edit Entry' button there.

On entries listed in the under the Guide Entries section, you may see labels informing you that your entry has been 'recommended'. This means that the entry has been recommended by one of the Scouts via the Peer Review scheme. If you see a label 'pending' you'll be pleased to know that your entry is being worked on by a Sub-editor or a member of the in-house team, and will be up in the Edited Guide before you know it. This process is described in detail here.

If you want to create a new Guide Entry, then simply click on the link at the bottom of this section to go into the Guide Entry Editor, where you can write your next masterpiece. For more information on Guide Entries, click here.

What's the Edited Guide Entries section all about?

If your entry is selected to become an Edited Entry, then you will have the unimaginable kudos of having contributed to the Edited Guide. (You will also be listed in the Researcher list for that entry, and the entry is likely to appear on the Front Page.)

If you've contributed in this way to an Edited Entry, then the details will appear in this section. If you want to know what sort of thing the Editors are looking for then click here. For more information about Edited Guide Entries and the Editorial Process, click here.

How can I edit or delete things I've written?

This depends on what it is you want to change:

  • To edit or delete a Guide Entry, simply click on the 'Edit' link next to the entry's name in the Guide Entries section in your Personal Space. This will take you to the Guide Entry Editor from where you can edit or delete your Guide Entry. Or you can go along to the entry you'd like to edit and click on the 'Edit Entry' button in the entry's margin, which will take you to the same place.

  • To change the introduction in your Personal Space, click on the 'Edit Page' button in your Personal Space.

  • To delete entries from your Journal, use the 'Remove this Journal Entry from my Personal Space' link which appears next to Journal Entries. If you want to reinstate a Journal Entry you've deleted, then you can do this by following the instructions here.

  • You cannot edit Edited Guide Entries as these will typically consist of lots of Researchers' Guide Entries combined into one. If you spot a problem with an Edited Guide Entry then you should alert the Editor of that entry (the Editor's name and a link to their Personal Space can be found in the entry's 'Entry Data' box).

What do the extra buttons in my Personal Space do?

The only extra button on your Personal Space is the 'Edit Page' button, which enables you to edit the Introduction to your Personal Space (the text that is shown at the top of the page).

The 'Preferences' button used to be only available on Personal Spaces, but it's now available from every page.

What's so good about an h2g2 Personal Space?

Your h2g2 Personal Space is quite different from normal web pages, and here's why:

  • It's dynamic: your Personal Space is constantly updated to reflect your activity on h2g2 and other DNA sites, and provides you with an ever-changing nerve centre to help you keep track of your activity on h2g2.

  • It's really easy to edit, and you don't need to know GuideML - you can create a plain text Introduction, if you want. However, if you do understand GuideML then you can use it to your advantage to design a really nifty-looking Personal Space.

  • The contents of your Personal Space are automatically part of the Guide, and can be found by Researchers using the search engine.

  • You can easily be visited by other Researchers: all they have to do is click on your name whenever they come across it on site, and they'll be taken to your Personal Space.
