In-between

At the moment of Creation the Universe was a single, tightly packed block, having neither size, mass nor any quantifiable properties. In the end the Universe will collapse back into that unified nothingness. Until then, we have some room to move, explore and create. Repeat after me: I am just one of a huge number of loose bits of Creation flying about, and I think I like it.

The big 4-0
Oct 9, 2003

I'm turning forty this year. What's the big deal? It doesn't feel any different from thirty, or twenty.

Diatribe the First
Mar 15, 2003

The suburb is a unholy thing, neither city nor country, with the drawbacks of both but none of the advantages. Suburbs exist because people must live somewhere and, public opinion being fickle, the urge that brings us together into cities then turns and spreads outward. The houses are, invariably, the least interesting, having neither the country rusticity nor the urban glitz, but half-baked approximations of both. A suburb is a place you have to leave in order to do anything interesting or worthwhile.

Tributes
Mar 1, 2002

I lost two of my idols within one week - Chuck Jones, creator of the Coyote and Roadrunner, easily one of the best cartoon directors ever, and Spike Milligan, who turned anarchy into humor and vice versa. I never met either man, which makes me feel all the more impoverished. Cherish the people you know, for they won't be around forever.

No,no, no
Aug 22, 1999

The trouble is, I don't think I lead an interesting life. The grinding wheels of the Universe (and let's not forget Everything) seem to turn in an entirely different direction from the one I am headed in. Perhaps I do lead an interesting life, and am mistaken in my judgement. I have travelled, a bit, and am reasonably smart, I think. It's not that I'm having trouble with my lifestyle, but rather that I don't have a lifestyle to have trouble with. This may be a new and undiscovered form of free-floating angst. I must find a pop psychologist to write a best-selling about me. That might be interesting.

The Arts
Jun 7, 1999

Without the arts I would quickly become a vegetable. I cannot live without the sounds of it, the sights and smells and tastes of creative endeavor. I paint, play guitar, pretend to act (and pretend to be a good actor) and write. These are not merely hobbies, but essential nutrients. If you find me seated before my easel, wrapped up in thought, with music swirling about me (usually Bob Dylan or the Nields) you have found one happy sentient being. Yes, I know you may think that sentience and happiness are a rare combination, but they're not so hard to find. Do what you love to do. It's as simple as that.
Good grief, I sound smug.
