Hello... This page is rather dull, read one of these instead. | Baby Sex Selection | ...if you have always wanted a boy...or if you long for a little girl... | | The Higgs Boson | ...referred to as the 'holy grail of particle physics' or the 'God particle'... | | The Standard Model of Particle Physics | ...the best theory currently available to answer the question 'What is the world made of?'... | | The Hubble Space Telescope | ...for astronomers probably the most important space probe ever launched... | | DNA Fingerprinting | ...identifies the DNA from a certain individual to track down criminals, test the parentage of children, and to follow the evolution of species... | | Radiocarbon Dating | ...the single most useful dating technique available to archaeologists... | | Gran Sasso, Italy | ...a mountain range, a national park, and a particle physics laboratory... | | Symmetry and CP violation | ...there is a small difference between matter and antimatter... | | Adaptive Optics and Laser Stars | ...technology developed during the Cold War to search for satellites, now used by astronomers to image distant stars and galaxies, and could soon allow surgeons to examine the retina of a human eye... | | Antimatter | ...ordinary matter is made from atoms, which are made from nucleons, made from quarks, antimatter is made from antiatoms, made from antinucleons, made from antiquarks... | | Dark Matter | ...one of the biggest problems in contemporary physics, astronomy, and cosmology... |
I live in Oxford. I work in dark matter research. I write entries on any areas of science that catch my attention.

I noticed today that a google search for 'mammuthus primigenius' lists this page as number 1! Sorry to anyone who came here looking for information on elephantidae. Maybe I will write an entry on the beasts some day.

WIMP Hunting Sep 15, 2001
Anyone following my entries will have probably learnt that I hunt for WIMPs for a living. This is a strange profession involving spending time in underground laboratories, trying to get unreliable equipment to work. WIMP hunting involves counting the number of events in a particle detector, subtracting the background level, and looking at the result. If it's finite, either you've found some WIMPs, or you underestimated the background. You never know if a single count was caused by a WIMP, or something else. I haven't found any yet.
