| | Come - walk by the waves with me ..... | | Hello!
I'm Armorel.
I am a busy Mum in my mid forties, happily married for twenty six years, with two children, both adults now (!!) and we live on St. Marys, the largest of the Isles of Scilly, a tiny group of islands off the tip of Lands End, Cornwall, UK. Why 'Armorel'? Well, living on the Isles of Scilly as I do, I wanted to choose a name that reflected this very special place. I eventually decided on 'Armorel' from the novel 'Armorel of Lyonesse' by Sir Walter Besant.
My specialist subjects are computers, autism and special needs (my daughter is autistic), music, cookery, creative writing and, not surprisingly, the Isles of Scilly. I do try to make my writing as easy to read as possible and put in a touch of humour here and there (if possible...)
To date, my husband and I have built four computers but our last two have been purchased directly from suppliers. I like to think that I can find my way around a computer and can consider myself fairly 'expert' although the computing world is moving at such speed these days that it is difficult to keep up. I do get called on by neighbours, from time to time, to solve problems and offer advice. I'm sure I'm not the only computer enthusiast who has defunct computers hiding in cupboards and under beds together with boxes of miscellaneous computer bits and pieces "in case they come in useful some day".
Cookery? Well, we ran a very successful guest house here on the Isles of Scilly for eighteen years and I specialised in the 'pudding' side of the catering. I hope to offer a few of my favourite recipes for others to try out (please don't count calories here.....)
I enjoy music (although I'm not actually a musician) and listen to quite a wide range of styles. I have to confess to a weakness for rock music and especially enjoy the likes of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. In fact, I actually introduced my teenage son to such virtuoso modern rock guitarists as Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai! I also enjoy Afrocelts, Zero 7, Kirsty McColl, Peter Gabriel, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana and The Waterboys - a pretty eclectic mixture!
Autism and special needs are subjects very close to my heart. Despite increasing publicity, there is still so much to be done to educate the general public about mental and physical disabilities. Autism is particularly cruel because autistic children are quite often beautiful, other-worldly children who naturally attract attention before their odd behaviour is noticed..... and are often condemned......
I am a student of the Open University in the UK and have been studying mainly computing and technology course for the past five years. This distance-learning lark can be very challenging and it sometimes takes a lot of determination and dedication to win through. I would like to achieve an Honours Degree but it's going to take me some years yet to actually get there!

My husband is an artist and paints 'en plein air' in watercolours here on the islands. We have an Art Gallery where we sell his original watercolours and fine art prints together with prints, cards, postcards and a perpetual calendar featuring watercolours by his late aunt, Nan Heath, who was originally a native of the Potteries (Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire). It's quite a challenge to capture the swift-moving beauty of the islands when the weather can change in a matter of minutes.
So that's an introduction to me - hope it wasn't too boring.
Now "onward and upward" (as Reepicheep said in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader") *note to self* I must re-read those Narnia books again sometime .....

To all my American Friends - HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!
It's overcast here on the islands but warm and breezy. The sea doesn't look too rough in the sheltered Roadstead but there's probably a bit of a swell running outside the circle of the islands. I just heard two loud bangs - must be the lifeboat maroon - let's hope it's not an emergency and just some silly twit who has run out of fuel
Hubby is out painting ... well, it's his job and he always DID want to be a professional full time artist Talking of which, it's time for me to open our Art Gallery ... bye

Dipping a toe in the water Apr 17, 2005
So, there you have it!
I signed up to h2g2 yesterday, said 'hello' to my friendly neighbourhood ACE this morning, hunted out a suitable introduction to update from an obscure folder on my computer and submitted my first entry for Review.
Not bad eh?
Phew - off to bed now ......
