Gaston Lavoie, retired canadian diplomat.

Propulsion systems designer, member of MENSA

I joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in August of 1961 to learn electronics and telecommunications. I left the Royal Canadian Air Forces with honorable mention after setting up the Maritime Air Command telecommunication center in Halifax in 1965.

After a year working with Bell Canada, I joined I.B.M. Canada were I worked as a customer engineer during the development of the first mainframes. Although a difficult job at times, I managed to acquire a great deal of knowledge and experience in electromechanical devices of all types, and a great knack for trouble shooting problems on very complex systems. I left I.B.M. in 1972 to work as an independent service technician for the following 3 years.

In 1976 I joined the Department of External Affairs were, after 3 years, I was assigned the job of modernizing the department’s telecommunication network and its missions abroad. During that period I designed the layout, assembled and tested the system’s components, wrote the technical description and maintenance manuals, trained the technicians and operators, and installed part of the system. I was responsible for the telecommunication equipment used to repatriate the American embassy personnel during the hostage taking crisis in Iran in 1979. I was also given the job of looking after the telecommunication equipment at the Ottawa summit in July 1981.

I retired from External in 1983 to work on propulsion research as chairman of Propulsion Systems Research. The vice president and chief engineer was Sam Altman, retired acting director of the David Florida Laboratory, precursor to the Canadian Space Agency. Sam was one of founding fathers of the American and Canadian space programs and had accepted to work with me with no pay to help get the project going. The project also interested Jack Odgers, one of the engineers that designed to motors for the supersonic Concord. Jack invited me to bring my project to Laval university in Quebec but, he was retiring and his successor Detlef Kretchmer refused to accept the project. In 1993, I had to abandon the project for lack of funding.

Since 1994 I worked with native Elders from all over the world to collect their wisdom and share it with everyone. I am actively involved with the local community garden and have worked as one of the organizers of the annual native spiritual Gathering at Kitigan Zibi for the last 14 years which has an average attendance of 2000 people.

Journal Entries

This is where any Journal Entries would appear, if this Researcher had made any. Unfortunately they haven't managed to write anything, which is a shame because their Journal is where they could tell everyone what they've been up to. Is your Journal empty too? If so, this is how it'll appear to other Researchers who visit your Personal Space.
