Emerging, blinking, into the light
Jan 11, 2006

Well, I've been away for... umm... quite a while.

Very active elsewhere on the Internet, but for some reason h2g2 is inaccessible from the remote galaxy known only as The Galaxy Nobody Has Given A Good Name To Yet.

But I'm back now, and I might be a bit active again.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present...
Aug 5, 2004

In this week's marvellous edition of the h2g2 Post, the first installment of my new fiction series 'Unfinished History'.

Thankyou, thankyou very much.

Righty ho then
Apr 1, 2004

Not been to h2g2 for ages. Jumping back in feels so familiar and comfortable though...

* wanders off to eat some cake *

* comes back again *

Where was I? Ah yes, it's like pulling on a well-worn set of pants, or a familiar jumper, or some comfy, worn-at-the-knees trousers.

Not much to say really, just thought I'd put the sign up again that says 'I might actually be here'. If I don't come back often, people who know my offsite details, nag me, okay?

Ta muchly ok

I'm off again!
Jun 10, 2003

I only seem to post in here when I'm about to go away somewhere. I neglected to mention that I was going to Germany and Austria last week, but I've been there and come back, so now I'm off to Keswick to stay with my parents and sister for a few days on a campsite by Lake Windermere. I expect the scenery will be somewhat different to that which I observed in Berchtesgaden last week. Not that it's any less beautiful of course smiley

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to grovel to Shazz for missing two Posts in a row so soon after my appointment to the Team.

Happy Samhain!
Oct 31, 2002

(20021031 0044GMT)

To anyone following a Pagan faith which celebrates Samhain - happy Samhain.

To everyone else - happy Samhain!

You can still enjoy yourself even if it's not a religious festival for you. And I'm sure a lot of people will, coinciding as it does with Halloween. Go forth and make merry! Winter's coming sadface

Unless you're in the southern hemisphere, in which case - happy Beltane!

Oct 18, 2002

(20021018 1502BST)
One of my most frequently-visited websites has had its forum hacked to pieces today by some probably lame people who think they're cool and that what they do is fun. I am seriously unimpressed.

Hmm...
Oct 10, 2002

(20021010 0102BST)

We got linked to from a forum post on WiccaUK.com today. Unfortunately the page that they linked to didn't impress them very much (it's fairly inaccurate on the subject of Wicca and Witchcraft), and they seemed to think it was the BBC's opinion.

I told them otherwise, of course, although I doubt they'll be happy about the content even with that. Why should they be, if it's wrong? Which it does appear to be.

Should go to bed now.

Gibbering Thingys!
Aug 23, 2002

(20020823 2132BST)

I just found out that my Edited Entry on the Special Constabulary is linked to from the BBC Crime - Crime Fighters page on the Special Constabulary. Is that good or what? Proof I suppose that h2g2's being put to good use by the BBC, which is reassuring to say the least.

Plus it's one of my Entries - wow

Sweden!
Jul 31, 2002

(20020730 2321BST)
Well, I'm off to Sweden next week for a few days... going to be interesting, as I've never been there before and don't speak a word of Swedish, although I'm told there is a large amount of general English ability among the population, and since I'm staying in the company of some Swedes who speak very good English, I shouldn't have too much of a problem with that side of things.

What I am worried about is avoiding being fed too much fish - I hate the stuff!!!

A job...
Jun 19, 2002

(20020619 2200BST)
Well, I have a job, thanks Blue Arrow!

Unfortunately it's very dull, the air conditioning is too cold and one of the many people who I answer to is becoming quite irritating. I hope that wears off soon...

Only 5.5 weeks to go...

Employment Woe
Jun 10, 2002

(20020610 1531BST)

So my boss can't give me a job this summer because he doesn't have enough work. wah

That means I have to find another non-boring company to work for in a non-boring role which pays reasonably. And of course there's the usual problem with finding summer work as opposed to simply applying for an advertised job - which I've never done, but which I assume would be a lot easier. Certainly it's easier to find out where there are vacancies...

Now if only Red Hat UK's website worked...

Only one more exam to go! Woohoo! It's at 1630 today and should be quite interesting - I hope!

Ah, the joy of being almost out of exams... after this, no more until January! Woohoo!

Hardest exam over with...
May 20, 2002

(20020520 1132BST)
Well, that's Advanced Computer Graphics done with - very hard, that exam. Much like its predecessor Computer Graphics which I took last semester, I ran out of time in the exam, and was only able to answer three of the required four questions. Part of this was due to me forgetting some stuff which I then had to derive (not quite from first principles, thankfully) but it did waste more time than I would have liked.

Probably got an absolute maximum of 65% on that exam, but that's assuming most of what I did write was correct, which could be a bit on the cocky side, although what I did write for the first two questions I was fairly confident about.

Next exam: Compilers, Friday 25th of May @ 9am in the Portland Building, room A23. Should be doddle by comparison.

In the mean time, I'm going to see Attack of the Clones this afternoon. Woohoo! But first, I should find some choc ...

Three cheers for the Moderators!
May 16, 2002

(20020516 2115BST)
Hurrah for the Moderators! I edited my Space earlier today and they failed it on a broken URL to the Special Constabulary forum - which is all well and good, because the URL has changed, and to be left with a broken link on my Space... how embarrassing. To think I didn't change it earlier!

blush

So thankyou Moderators for alerting me to it! biggrin

Also, previewing this I noticed that the post time was shown as "Soon" - nice touch!

Very Happy MaW

Blergh
May 16, 2002

(20020516 1750BST)
Time seems to be slipping through my fingers again. Revision is necessary of course, but it seems to go so slowly and take up so much time I'd far rather be using to enjoy myself. In the mean time, the necessities of life - food, shopping and h2g2 - continue to demand my attention.

I've been looking forward to the exams since the group projects got into full swing, but now they're over, I'm looking forward to after the exams even more.

Joy!
Mar 27, 2002

(20020327 1133GMT)

Today, two good things have happened (so far) - my replacement monitor came, so I can at last get down to some decent coding, and the new Mediaeval Baebes album "The Rose" has arrived. It's superb!

Exam Results!
Feb 8, 2002

(20020208 1249GMT)
Got some exam results yesterday! I only took five modules last semester (the group project doesn't really count because it spans both this semester and last semester) and one of those hasn't been marked yet, but the marks I have are...

Computer Communications and Networking (G52CCN): 69%
Algorithms and Data Structures (G52ADS): 64%
Computer Graphics (G5BGRA): 63%
Database Systems (G52DBS): 77%

Which makes an average of just over 68%, which isn't bad really... if I'm very lucky and the mark for Professionalism, Ethical and Quality Issues (G52PQI) is decent, I might just be able to tweak up over 70%, which is a first instead of a 2:1... however, I find this unlikely because PQI was one of those modules you just flounder through and continually wonder why you have to do it.

Exams begin!

I have an exam at 1630 today. It's the first of four this semester, and is entitled "Algorithms and Data Structures". What joy...

Still, it's got to be better than the upcoming "Database Systems".

Christmas!!!
Dec 25, 2001

(20011226 0000GMT)
Now Christmas Day is just over, so I'd like to say a big thankyou to my family for such lovely gifts as the first four Harry Potter books from Nanna, and a genuine cuddly cute duck from FABT. He will of course be coming to the next meet, but I don't know what to call him. Suggestions welcome...

Dec 7, 2001

I want to write a new Guide Entry over Christmas, but I can't think of what to write it on...

Isn't this terrible? Oh well, I'm sure I'll think of something eventually. Perhaps a programming language one again... Ruby, perhaps. Yes, I think maybe Ruby...

Extreme Happiness
Dec 5, 2001

(20011205 1428GMT)
Isn't it nice to get something onerous out of the way? My group project interim report is in and done and now it's time to breath deeply and easily for a while, and get on with some decent programming.

Ah, the joy, the joy...

Nov 24, 2001

Why do we have to do interim reports for our group projects? Oh why oh why oh why?

As you may have guessed, I really, really am not enjoying writing it.
