I had carpal tunnel surgery 3 hours ago.
The

Now I'm settled on the sofa, my wrists packed in ice and my iPad in my lap. I'll be home for 10 days, so there is a chance I could catch up on the backlog here.

A busy and productive day.
I restocked the larder. Then I figured out how the washer and dryer work and did laundry. Then I got the desktop pc set up and, lo and behold, it booted! Backed up the iPad and updated the operating system. Backed up the iPhone and activated the new iPhone. The new phone is restoring from backup as I type.
Still got a bunch of boxes to unpack, but I'm getting there.
Still haven't found my shoes.

Slept in this morning. Bliss.
Started off the day with a trip to the local hospital for pre-admission testing for my carpal tunnel surgery. That done, returned home, brewed a pot of coffee, and unpacked some more. Kid #2 got up around noon. I dragged her along for the retail therapy mentioned in yesterday's journal. I am looking for a dinette for the breakfast nook and a computer armoire for the living room. I managed to find a table, which I acquired with a 15% discount because it was on sale.
I didn't like the chairs that went with the dinette. I saw something I like much better at Ikea with a lower price, so that is on my to-do list. The hunt for the armoire continues.
Tomorrow: more unpacking and food shopping.
I told you reading these journals would be boring.

Empty white box on a goo blue background.
Oh, good. It's not empty anymore. Not much of any interest in it, though. Not much to be said about typing, phone answering and box unpacking.
However, I'm looking forward to some serious retail therapy tomorrow.

I was "spoken to" at work today. Seems I am "short" with people. In fact, I was "short" with the general manager, hence the litlle chat this afternoon.
It's true. I get short with people after they have failed to understand me after 3 or 4 attempts to get my point across. Particularly when it pertains to work I am required to do. It is one of the ways I express frustration. Because the GM knows that I've had a lot of stress in my personal life, he wanted to know since the move to my new home was complete would I be less stressed at work. I told him that although I moved 2 wholes day ago I still had about 100 boxes to unpack. So yeah, no stress there.
Then, because he was watching me closely today after the morning incident, he brought up an exchange between me and another woman in the office. I was concentrating on my work and entering data into my computer. She sits about 3 feet behind me. She said, "Witty?". I said, "Yes?". She said, "Witty?". I said, "Yes, I'm listening." She said, "Look at me!" with a tone like I should have turned and looked at her upon her first attempt to get my attention. Really? REALLY?
So anyway, the GM wanted to know what else he could do to reduce my stress level. Because I am "The Rock" of the office.
Nothing can or will be done, really. The chaos at work is unfixable, and as long as people keep interrupting me to fix their problems, I will never get my own work done. I just have to stop caring about it. Stress gone.

Chaos still reigns at Casa Moniker. I am really backlogged at work, so I went into the office this morning intending to put in 3 or 4 hours. That turned into 7 hours. The next order of business was to pick up the last of the stuff at my sister's beach house, including the cats.
So, I'm now ensconced on the sofa, glass of nearby, iPad in my lap (as I haven't managed to connect the pc back up yet). The kitties have been fed and all 3 are hanging out with me in the living room.
Life is good, if a little messy at the moment.

Those of you subscribed to my journal have been starved for information about me. Well, not this month. I've committed to participating in National Journal Writing Month here in my journal on h2g2. Prepare to be bored.
Today I moved house. I am exhausted. It's a wonder that I remembered to post at all. While the movers moved the furniture and boxes in, I supervised the cable guy. The Internet connection was of the highest priority, of course. As you can see, it works
I like my new little place. Compact but very comfortable. Definitely lemonade from lemons, if you get my drift.

Insight
Sep 10, 2010
So I was chatting with my supervisor today in the way one does about life in general. I mentioned that I had 2 cars serviced by my mechanic this week which resulted in some significant expense that, fortunately, I had some savings tucked away that have it covered. Then I mentioned that I had just done some research into hotel rates in London and the, coincidentally, the amount for 6 nights at a moderate hotel pretty much coincided with what I had just spent on the cars.
And she said, "Why would you want to go to London on vacation?"
We need a smiley.

A random act of kindness
Aug 29, 2009
I happened to be home on Friday, a day I normally work at my part time job. My boss had asked me to come in on Wednesday instead. Some time in the early afternoon the doorbell rang. Darn, I thought, not enough warning to pretend I'm not home, the tv is on and visible from the window near the front door.
I answered the door and there stood middle aged man and a teenage boy with some sort of obvious mental challenge. The man explained that his boat had run out of gas and could he borrow a phone to call for help. (I live on Barnegat Bay.) He explained that he hadn't brought his mobile because it was drizzling off and on slightly. I ducked back in the house to grab the cordless handset. I couldn't invite him in, more because the house was a wreck rather than for personal safety issues.
He asked the person on the other end of the line if they would grab their gas container, stop by the gas station, get some gas and bring it to my house. I thought to myself that this was getting complicated. It was one thing if he had the gas on hand, but having to have someone run out was a drag. Apparently, that someone thought so, too because I gathered that the man was told to just call the marina and see if they could bring some. I walked over to my shed to see what I had left in the gas container I use for my lawn mower. There was a bit left in there (not even a gallon) so I brought it back out front with me.
I offered it to the man and told him he was welcome to it. He only had to travel around the point to the next neighborhood over. He said he would give it a try. He got the engine started, pulled up his anchor and they proceeded on their way.
I hoped it was enough gas to get them to their destination.
So this morning I was being a slug and was still in my pajamas watching the news on tv. The doorbell rang about 10:15 am.
I peeped through the window and it was the mariner! I can't ~not~ answer the door! I opened it and there he stood with a little
wrapped in tissue paper! He stopped by the thank me again. Of course, I told him it was completely unnecessary, but I was please to know they had enough fuel to make it all the way home. And off he went on his way.
I opened the
and it was a Tervis Tumbler with one of my favorite graphics embedded in it! http://tinyurl.com/npbcy3
I ~own~ a set of Tervis Tumblers! How did this guy know??
I don't know his name, probably never will. And that's ok. I just love it when the stars line up and the universe treats me with a little respect. I probably should have given him my cv while the gettin' was good.

Daughter #1 is well into casing prospective colleges and universities. She's got it narrowed down to five. This is good. All of them are within a two hour drive. This is very good. She has them ranked in order of preference. This is good, too. Wanna know her first choice?
NYU
The thing is, she has an outside chance of being admitted. This may or may not be good. Tuition plus room and board is $40,000.

Renewal
Jul 31, 2004
Some of you may remember that I've been doing some wishful thinking that my eighteen year old appliances would take their last gasp. They served well and don't owe me and my family a thing, but... oh! what technology has come up with in the mean time!
Things didn't start out like I planned yesterday. My blender suffered an irreparable crack in the gears that make it go. The blender isn't that old and I really liked it.
But, I was able to replace it with exactly the same model with added food processor attachment for less that half what I paid for the original
Today, however, my fridge decided to go haywire. The compressor was running, but the fan wasn't circulating. "Yipee!", I said. I had a replacement all picked out. So Mr. Moniker and I ran down to the local purveyor of household applicances and ordered new one. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/prod...subcat=Bottom+Freezer+Refrigerators
I decided I deserve it.
It's coming in 3 days!

While I've been a researcher almost from the beginning, I've spent most of that time reading others' articles. I've only just started exploring the community aspect of H2G2.com.
And what I thriving community it is!
My current name (Witty Moniker AKA 15777) is temporary until I put some thought into a name that "fits" me.
