Don't do it.
We didn't on saturday.
The reason for this was that we had to beg to be served at every point in the meal. We had to beg to be seated, beg to be brought menus, beg to order drinks, beg to be brought drinks, beg to order food and most surprising of all beg for the bill.

I meant the Bombay Balti, not the bombay resturant (which I don't think exists anyway)

If you have trouble paying the bill give them one final chance.

Just say

"I wish to pay my bill. If it is not here in two minutes we will leave anyway".

Then watch how quickly the bill arrives as you stand up.

I read in the Australian Gourmet magazine yonks ago that if you want good service in a restaurant, the first thing you have to do upon being shown to your table is to complain about its location and get another. This alerts the staff that you're "fussy" and it will make their lives easier if they give good service. Then you can tip.

If I don't get my bill rapidly after asking I stand at the door and put my coat on. If it's not there by the time it's buttoned I'm halfway out of the door usually before I get it. No tip.

Every time I go to Swizterland someone tells us that if you've asked for the bill 3 times you're legally allowed to leave without paying. It's never happened, and I don't know if it's true or not, but it sounds good to me.

In England & Wales (not sure about Scotland), if you are unhappy with your meal in a restaurant you can legally leave. You must pay what you consider a fair amount (which may be nothing) and leave your name and address. Restarateurs can then pursue such matters in the court (probably the small claims court) if they so choose.
