Yes, we're going to give the mortgage and housing market another go. At least this year, we don't have the recertification for staying in a rent-controlled apartment hanging over us. (Are we poor enough to stay, or will we have to move because we made $100 over the limit for the year?) So if nothing comes of the hunt, we don't have to worry about the possibility of homelessness. This reduces stress considerably.

Good luck, Amy. When did you go on hiatus? Did you know I finally bought a condo and moved?

WM--Yep, I remember hearing you movedbiggrin The house last year didn't pass the inspections, so we backed out. Our finances/circumstances (Tom's the head of a nonprofit, so doesn't get paid consistently, and I work for the school district, so only get a paycheck 10 months of the year) are such that there aren't a lot of house-buying options--generally 1 house a year...

I feel sorry that you have to walk such a tightrope every year, Amy. You have to be poor enough to qualify for assistance in the house deal falls through, but rich enough that you might be able to buy a really economical house. That would be enough to drive a lot of people crazy. online2long

The whole system over there seems freaking weird to this Brit.

I live in a (very pleasent) council owned property. I have secure tenancy with no time limit, cheap rent. I have free health care. It makes me feel vaguely dirty when I hear what other folks have to go through, the hoops you have jump, the tightropes you have walk...

I have a good feeling about this year, though.

I really should get that thing I'm writing about the stuff that happened while I was 'netless finished, though there are bits (mostly contained in a footnote) that

Um, I don't remember what I was going to saylaugh

The good thing is, a friend of ours has offered to help with the downpayment and closing costs, if we find a place.

The people who have very little can usually find some sort of helping hand, either from goverbment or from charitable organizations. The people who have secure finances and a reasonably high standard of living can manage without help.

But there are people who straddle the border between these two groups. If you barely miss the line, you can qualify for the help, but you might be close enough to afford a home of your own if it's really cheap and you have a few friends who can get you the rest of the way. I sense that Amy and Tom are in this category. It's a shame that legislators never thought of a way to help this part of the population. sadface

We've (well, I've, since Tom will be busy, but not so busy I can't drop the girls off at the bookstore with him, especially since Faith will need to do her keyboard practiceevilgrin ) got an appointment Wibble afternoon to see if we can qualify for enough on a Homepath Mortgage. There's a place on the correct side of Pacific Ave. (one of what passes as busy streets here--HN may remember riding along to take Faith to school and my commenting on the new stop signs that made actually turning onto Pacific not take forever...) for a certain kid to walk to school by herself, though Tom doesn't like that ideasigh She could always join up with her classmate that walks with his big brother and grandpa on nice days, though... I haven't looked in the house yet, because I want to see if we can get a loan. I do look at it as I drive by to drop off and pick Grace up from her caregiver's house, though--it's only a very few blocks with sidewalk most of the way, and less than half a dozen blocks to the ocean (a couple more blocks for beach access, as the cliff's high enough that the neighborhood's out of the tsunami evacuation zone).

Links will come if we qualify for a loanwinkeye

*Much* easier, kelli! If it doesn't work out this time, we'll save up a bit more (help with down/closing costs is great, but appliances cost, too, as does furniture...). Once we have a place and spend our "house savings" we can get back on public healthcare (I'm a part-time employee, Tom's technically self-employed, and while our incomes are more than low enough for healthcare, we can only have the equivelant just under 1 month's worth of paychecks in savings (luckily, the ministry's accounts don't count for most assistance--just for the housing assistance we had, which accounts for the nailbiting every year)). Meanwhile, we just need to stay healthy and uninjured. Colds don't count, of course.

*waves preapproval letter around*

It's for an amount that should actually be useful, too. I do need to check to see what the property requirements are for this program, though--I do know the location has to be rural, but for this program, this entire county is rural, even in the middle of downtownlaugh
