Subject: Abbreviations and their explanations.

I'm in the process of putting together my first guide entry. I've had some fantastic help so far, but I'm a bit stumped on one point.

Emmily suggested that I put a full explanation prior to the abbreviations since that was the first time the reader got to see the term, ie

Road Taxed Vehicle Trial (RTVT)

I have absolutely no problem with that, but one of the abbreviations I have used (TYRO) has no known explanation; a fact I have mentioned in the entry)

How should I handle this?

I was under the impression that it was originally a word, not an abbreviation for anything -- which is why some websites have the others all in caps, but have Tyro and not TYRO. And because "tyro" as word means "new soldier" or "beginning in learning", that makes sense to me.

That's what I love about this site - there's always someone with an answer!!!!biggrin

You wait till I tell them at the Land Rover club - they've been running a competition for years in the club mag regarding its meaning.laugh

I shall adjust my entry.

Just as a matter of interest though, since I posed the question, if my original scenario were true, how should it be dealt with?

You'd just add a footnote explaining that no one was sure what it stood for.

cheers
