  | | No, I couldn't.
But can I just say, with the spooky background it looks like a shot from a horror film? Nothing wrong with the people, it's just the setting. I think I've dug myself a hole now.
One of my junior school teachers smacked my hand once when she lost her temper.

  | | I got the ruler for playing around with the girl-in-front-of-me's hair in assembly. I was plaiting it. She wasn't protesting, but the headmaster pointed at me & told me to saty behind. I stood there like a lemon when everyone else had gone. He approached me & asked me what hand I wrote with. I said "My right"....and he told me to hold out my left hand. I was holding my book for the first lesson, and I didn't think to swop hands. He hit me so hard with the ruler, that I dropped the book on the floor. Tears stang my eyes, but I stood there & took it. He hit my hand another couple of times then yelled at me "Let that be a lesson to you to pay attention!". When I went back to my classroom, my teacher made me stand out at the front of the class and she said "This girl has been punished for not behaving herself" I wanted to crawl into a hole and die. I have never forgotten it. I should add this was in Junior school....I was younger than 11. This was the one and only time I ever got into trouble at school.

  | | Yes, I can see what you mean, it was actually taken outside a church at a wedding, but looking at the photo I think I was a bit bored! (That's my uncle Denny in the pic with me by the way!).
I remember a teacher slapping me really hard around the back of the legs too, when I was a child it was seen to be acceptable to cane children at any age, and it was used pretty often too. It seems really harsh now, but your parents just accepted it as reasonable behaviour.

  | | It seems so odd that parents spent such a lot of time trying to keep their children safe, not wanting them to get hurt, but they are happy to hurt them themselves or let teachers do it. If someone did that to my kid I couldn't accept it and I think I'd react very very badly and probably do something I'd regret later. I won't even let J's dad or my parents smack him.

  | | That's such a no-no, J and I were both in a temper arguing at the dinner table and he banged his knife and fork into the table, damaging it. I think my exact (shouted) words were "you are so lucky I'm in a bad mood already, otherwise you'd have been smacked for that". He went very quiet and started behaving.
