In Blackadder III, when the actors come over to teach the Prince how to give a speech, Blackadder gets fed up and leaves, saying to Baldrick: "I wouldn't bet you one Grote that you could survive 5 minutes without me."

May I assume that Grote is an old slang word for penny?
