I mostly access h2g2 at home on my (relatively secure) wired home connection, but I'll often come here on my laptop via a public wi-fi, and the login page isn't https. I don't like logging in to anything on a public connection if the login page doesn't have that extra 's'. If the cookie didn't expire every seven days that problem wouldn't arise. When we first relaunched it lasted about a month, but people were concerned because there was (at the time) no log out button. It seemed to be popular opinion then to have the cookie last one week. I don't know what a self expiring cookie is, and I hadn't noticed lack of a log out button as I never do it, but that seems to be something urgent for those on shared computers? How long for the new system? Could still be my mac's cache or something.
