Start off with saying that there are no rules (save the House Rules), and that there are no guidelines (save the following). ... That should set the tone. Anyway, I do think some guidelines are in order (though the idea of having none is appealing ). Why? Beacuse if we were to set the UG up in PR we'll completely swamp PR with stuff and noone will be happy and fluffy. If we set it up elsewhere we'll be swamped with lots of stuff and we will not be happy and fluffy. The guidelines will have to serve the purpose of damming the flood of jokes, one-liners and urban legends from drowing any effort to sive through the truly good UG stuff. Just emagine every posting from the Tell Us A Joke thread would come along as a UG entry... IMO we can leave all the heavy stuff up to the House Rules. If we give the impression that we'll accept any old thing, then where's the prestige in being picked? Isn't that part of the appeal of the EG, that it's seen an accomplishment to be accepted there? If it's possible that we'll be conferring some kind of official status, we shouldn't treat it lightly. I am won over. No more anarchy for me! We do need guidelines: originality is one; own style is another; don't try too hard to be funny; (any of these sounding familiar? only goes to prove what a good job Mark did in the dim and distant past, I guess). I think we can catch the jokes and one liners not in the guidelines but in the listing of the kinds of works that we want: first person ok but make it interesting rather than self-obsessed - an inside view on somone famous, and unusual life-experience, a personal view of some travelling, etc; fiction is ok but don't plagiarise including plagiarising characters and locations from other peoples' works; poetry is good; parody and pastiche are good if they *are* good; personal views of something, musings, theories, etc are good, but some of these may be EG material so try the EG first.... I am running out of steam now, and this is nothing like a definitive list... (BTW - the entry in PR on Scrotum Itch made me laugh, though I don't see it as either EG or UG material, and I doubt that it is that original). See what you think.
