Kirk, Spock and Bones were on the surface of a planet but they'd had to hand over their communicators, and then Scotty got a distress call from a Federation vessel that was under attack by Klingons and he decided to leave orbit and go and help them, that he'd at least be able to leave a message that the Captain could pick up once he got his communicator back and couldn't raise the Enterprise because they're out of range, right?
