Entry: Adventure Games - A12675585
Author: Bagpuss - U152404

I can't think of anything more to add, but let me know if you've any ideas.

I'm considering suggesting this as an update for A291412 on Text Adventure Games. It's rather short and I think any links could reasonably go to this article instead. Should I go to the Update Forum?

Also, can anyone confirm the drowning thing in Monkey Island? I'm loath to repeat it as fact without confirmation.

What is the drowning thing in Monkey Island? My daughters have played all the monkey island games so they may be able to confirm it.

I think this Entry should mention the fact that Infocom dominated the text adventure market, long before there was such a thing as an IBM PC, with their Zork series and many others.

Would it be worth linking to websites where you can play adventure games online? Rinkworks (http://www.rinkworks.com/adventure/) has some excellent ones, although they work by selecting options from a menu rather than by typing commands. http://www.astrodragon.com/astro-adventure01.html has Colossal Cave and Zork available to play online.

Oops, "Zork - The Cavern of Doom" is NOT the same thing as Zork, but here's a better Zork link:

If I remember well, Guybrush Threepwood dies in one of the episodes. I mean, this is a required part of the plot.

Blast, spotted the same "role-plkaying" typo as Rudest Elf. Too late.

Nice entry!

cheers

Sorry, the drowning thing is footnote 5.

I haven't time for extensive updates at the moment, but I'll bear the links and other suggestions in mind. I don't really want to end up with lists of games, though.

Adventure games appeared on various computers in the early to mid 1970s. This was long before the advent (or even the idea) of home computers. I was never really interested in them and so can't tell you much more. According to Wikipaedia, the original, Colossal Cave Adventure, was devised on a PDP-10.

geek It is true that you can drown Guybrush in Monkey Island - yesterday I tried it out, and Guybrush does indeed die if you keep him underwater for ten minutes. It surprised me because, as you said, it's normally impossible to lose the LucasArts games (other than getting stuck and giving up).

Thanks Aurora. I thought it was true, but I just wanted some confirmation. The entry is now more certain.

Algernon - good point, though home computers appeared by the end of the 70s, surely? I've changed the wording a bit.

2legs - HHGTTG game has been added. Follow the link and you can play it. I hope you don't mind if I don't add your other comments, though.

Ekaterin - I'm not sure about doing a huge number of links. A few more would be okay, but I'm not that sure about the ones you linked to. Rinkworks seems to be there own rather than any classics, and the other doesn't have many adventures.

Gnomon - Infocom's been added.

There was another early text based adventure game called IIRC Queen of Sheba. This involved resourse management - it was an early God game I suppose.

Then there was StarTrek - his used to throw up a 10x10 grid which showed the Enterprise and any enemies. Basically you shot up Klingons, tried to avoid Romulans, and called at bases for Spares and repairs.

There was also an early PC game called Rogue - where you went looking for an amulet, picking up potions swords and wands, whilst fighting monsters.

Star Trek didn't fit into the "Adventure Game" category. It was more of a simulation, like Age of Empires. Rogue was more like a fantasy role-playing game.

I bought "Adventure" in about 1982 for my Apple ][. I still remember that feeling of wonder and amazement when I waved the stick and the computer replied:

A CRYSTAL BRIDGE SPANS THE FISSURE.

("Adventure" was later renamed Colossal Cave Adventure to distinguish it from all the games made in its style.)

McKay, I'm aware of Rogue: A2266788

Did anyone have any comments on making this a replacement for A291412?

Sounds like a good idea. If you decide to do that, you should probably credit Kate Schechter as a co-author of your entry, since she deserves credit for her entry, even if you've used very little of it. This should be done through the Update Forum.

Okay, I'll withdraw from PR. Be back in the UF.

I didn't really use the original article except for the Interactive Fiction Archive link. I wonder if I could give Kate an "additional research" credit. How do you do them again?

I'd talk to Jimster before demoting Kate to an "Additional Researcher". The original idea was that the Researcher would continue to be an author, even if their entry was subsequently changed beyond recognition.
