Okay, I'm over it. What an emotional little vignette, though. I'd never heard this tale or the poem before. Thank you for sharing. The images the words conjure up definitely will haunt a person...probably for a lifetime. You've left another impression upon me, Titania.
Ouch! That's gonna leave a mark...
It's such an evocative poem, and the German phrasing does indeed 'bring up the hackles' on the back of my neck at the concluding stanzas. The translations provided by Wiki are pretty good, though they leave a bit to be desired in the meter, flow, and solid rhyming. It almost makes me want to do another adaptation to imbue it with more current syntax, vernacular, language. I might just give it a go...
