I wonder what became of that warehouse full of luminescent inflatable squids.

*mystfied by something Ivana said, trying to recall it*

Ivana, you said something about us having to go on foot over the dead ground beyond the ridge - how come we can't use the raft?

Well the short answer is that you can use the raft ........ but only if we want to advertise your presence long before we get there. If we do that then they'll be armed, ready and very very dangerous.

I'm afraid that this stage of our journey calls for guile and cunning rather than frontal assault.

It's not the only thing we'll have to leave behind either - Red will have to abandon Toby as well.

Sorry Red ..... I wish there was an easier way to break it to you sadface

Methinks that the raft can still some in handy, as a decoy.

Ivana, are you saying that 'they' will notice the raft, despite the camouflage?

I like the idea of using it as a decoy...

I don't think the camouflage will help us with this predicament Titania and they're not a primitive tribe like the Gobolds - they are a sophisticated and ruthless organisation and we shouldn't underestimate the difficulty of traversing the mines.

You see when STUMPED merged with CLI they acquired all sorts of advanced technology. They have this deadly augmented Iceball Cannon and lots of other nasty things in their armoury. We're seriously outgunned and I'm afraid to use the raft as a decoy.

Also if it's used as a decoy whoever pilots it would also have to be prepared to undertake what would be a suicide mission .... they wouldn't stand a chance of catching up with us once we enter the mine as we'll stir up a hornets nest by our passage. This is a one-way one chance trip.

CLI was bankrupted by aerosol meat? But that is *such* a good idea! Just spray it on a bun, I can see it being a huge hit.

Anyway, I think we've spent enough time underground. I say no mines, we take the mountain pass. It doesn't look too bad. Kind of snowy up there, but we're dressed for it.

I imagine that Affy can find a way to jury-rig the raft so that no one has to pilot it. Can't you Affy?

I'm not overfond of undeground routes either, but they do offer protection from the weather, dressed for it or not, snow will slow us down.

Gord, you must know the mines pretty well, do you know of a way through that might be less guarded than the rest?

*pulls one out of her pack and gives it to sea* I tie them round my hat when I'm in tunnels and such, and they act like miners' lamps except with much more pleasing chromatic properties.

As for where they came from, you'd have to ask Affi. We've been using them as party favors for years, but more recently he came up with these luminescent ones, which I find pretty useful. They function as night lights in all the guest bathrooms at the atelier, although we have to warn the guests about looking before sitting down. silly

Inflatable squids? *puffs out chest* That's one of CLI's premiere products. So handy at patio parties and even in dark caves and tunnels...
eureka
biggrin Hey! If we could find those, Lil, they could help out a lot when we go through the mines.

Thought I posted that long ago, but it was still open, unposted, in another window. Took a chance and posted it. Lil's answer was better. And I had forgotten that she still had some.

Sorry folks, but I can't tell you anything about the mines - they didn't exist in my time.

*Looks proudly at Ivana*

But if IAN says she knows a way through, then I'm prepared to follow her.

*Finishes eating. Balls up the paper wrappers from his food and tosses the wad at a garbage can. Misses, and the wad of paper bounces off the garbage can and hits McApe's head.*
