There are other species of human known to wear lab specs. For example, even the most popular kid in school was made to look like a freak in science classes. Do you remember those cover half your face goggles they used to make you wear? And the elastic straps at the back ensured that they never fitted anyone properly.

And people who do metal work get the pleasure of wearing them too.

Excellent point - I even knew a guy at school who had a pair of prescription lab spec type things which he wore for sport so as not to break his glasses. Mind you he looked like a freak even when he wasn't wearing them...
