>>*Christmas* has always been Jesus' birthday<<

No, Jesus was born in the summer, we celebrate in winter.

In Eastern Germany, they weren't supposed to celebrate Christmas either. The shops did sell chocolate angels and santas, though, and called them "Jahresendfiguren" - "year's end figures". It also happened to coincide with one of the two times per year we could send them care packages from the west, with coffee and sweets...

re 178: Winther solstice was celebrated for many years up here before the christians came and called it christmas and claimed Jesus was born this day

But there is no "year zero" - never has been - ergo: Jesus has never been born geek

Jesus was born in August of 1979. I just spoke to him out on the street and he said so.

Oh wait, you mean that other one? Carpenter family and stuff? Sorry ... erm

I just remembered watching a documentary years ago where several scientist s discussed when Jesus was born, judging from astronomical obervations (the socalled star over Bethlehem) and other facts. They only agreed on one thing: He could never have been born 24.-25. December in the year that is left out of our calendar, but possibly a few years before or after biggrin

Hang on, I thought your point was that Jesus' birthday is Christmas, regardless of when you celebrate it. huh A birthday is a birthday, it's just that Jesus' has a special name. Heck, on the 12th of December it's Vipmas. tongueout

For political reasons, the date was changed to coincide with numerous other winter festivals, but the name 'Christmas' has always been associated with Jesus. Before this date, the term 'Christmas' didn't exist. People may have celebrated Yule or other winter festivals instead, but they weren't 'Christmas'.

Who started all this nonsense about JC being born in year zero? He was born in 1 AD. We called the previous year 1 BC. There was no good concept of zero at the time this calendar was designed.

I never say "cheers" meaning "thanks", even though other Irish people around me have started doing it.

They do say 'ta', for 'thanks' here Dmitri (in N Staffs) - and 'ta-ta' or 't-ra' for goodbye.

In Spanish the imperative for 'to give' is da. Which sounds a whole lot like 'ta' - most parents teach their baby to give you something by saying 'ta' and holding out their hand. Or 'da' - biggrin if they're Spanish.

I say 'ta'. I don't say 'cheers' though, unless it's clear the the person I'm saying it to is the sort of person that would say it to me.

I guess it's partly that we end up saying thankyou so many times in an exchange that it's nice to have a bit of variety! laugh

I say 'ta' to friends, and like vip say 'cheers' if talking to someone who seems to be the sort who'd say it to me.

'Ta' is definitely more common in the Midlands and further north.
