It is often said that 'life imitates art'.

Now, we don't want to claim that we thought of it first - but, well, we did. Some years ago, yours truly wrote a jeu d'esprit on this site concerning those jolly galactic jokers, the citizens of the imaginary nation of Gotha - who play Goth baseball, have a pennant rather than a flag, and specialise in playing practical jokes on their political enemies. In one of these pieces, I described how the Goths attacked the humourless Romulans by staging an 'invasion' of cute teddy bears.

To prove I did this, here is the link: A68957356

Now, I'm not claiming that the intrepid Swedish advertisers who put this prank into practice were h2g2 readers, but it makes you wonder. And crow with delight.

On 4 July, the two Swedes flew a light plane under the radar of Belarus' defence system, and dropped 879 parachuting teddy bears carrying human rights messages on Minsk and environs.

Yay, Swedes! You are true to the spirit of Gotha. King Terry says, 'May our national bird, the Bluebird of Happiness, light upon you.'

Apparently, the ruler of Belarus, a fella named Lukashenko, fired two top generals. After all, he's been boasting that his country is an impenetrable bulwark against NATO, or some such.

Plush toys for freedom, that's the ticket. Let us praise inventiveness, courage, and humour in the service of human progress, wherever their inspiration came from. biggrin

Story and video here:

This protest group are people after our own hearts: among other initiatives, they have organised the Pillow Fight World Cup, according to the NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/02/w...-bear-airdrop-vexes-lukashenko.html

Let us salute them - long live guerrilla peace studies!

Thomas Mazetti (the man in the photo in your first external link) is one of the founders of the PR company Studio Total and it was the company that staged this - a profit driven company and by no means any idealists.

*If they did this (and most media in Sweden doubt that it happened at all and that it was all staged) they did it on behalf of one of their clients.

Let's assume it actually did happen - who would that client be?

And the reason Swedish media doubt that it happened is that the main piece of 'evidence' that Studio Total has managed to present is a video - made by themselves.

Read this article:

And then guess what the teddy bear story and this one have in common?

huh That's interesting, Titania. So the Swedish media aren't buying it?

Deutsche Welle seems to believe them. Here's their interview:

http://www.dw.de/dw/article/0,,16139066,00.html

Al-Jazeera is behind it, with a picture and interviews:

http://m.aljazeera.com/SE/20127279351012537

If I'm understanding this correctly, the Belarus government says it happened. As a result, it is claimed, they fired two generals and arrested at least two people for posting pictures on the internet.

I'm sure it can be argued that this kind of thing might be counterproductive, since it will just make a nervous government more paranoid...

Still researching...have you got a link we can read in Sweden?

Thanks for the link, Titania. ok The NY Times, I believe it was, mentioned the money-burning incident.

I can see that this group is prone to extravagant gestures (which was really my point - that, and that I was surprised that they did something like an idea I had once in a little sci-fi story).

Oh, sorry. I meant a link to an article that says this didn't happen at all. It seems that the world press is claiming it did happen.

And in the two articles you linked to, I can't (although I admit I only skimmed them) find an 'official' testimony confirming it actually happened, just anecdotes, photos and videos found on the net.

Well, I have dozens of links in Swedish, trickier to find them in English though.

While I'm searching, here's another of Studio Total's creations:

Well, would you believe Time? Here's what they say:

http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/08/01...n-belarus-gets-two-officials-fired/

Now, to save the skimming:

'“How can you explain that a light aircraft, which not only crossed the border, but also with impunity, invaded the territory of the Republic of Belarus? It is first and foremost a matter of the safety of our citizens,” Lukashenko said, according to news agency Interfax as reported in USA Today.'

Chasing down the 'official statement':

The BBC confirms that the firings were official on Tuesday, and that a couple of arrests had been made:

Firings yes, arrests yes, but the original action?`Did they actually fly in and drop those teddybears to begin with? Solid evidence please, from credible witnesses.

Meanwhile, here's Studio Total's own statement on the Belarus thing - in English:

I was going to say, post links in Swedish - then I thought better of it. That would be unfair to most of the people who might read this.

I get your point, I think - that these people are jokers from way back, and irritating to people in Sweden, and that nobody believes them anymore because they've been fooled before? I can understand that.

But it does look like the teddy bears in parachutes happened. Unless every press agency in the world has fallen victim to a massive hoax. huh

And by 'credible' witnesses I guess I mean 'identifiable' and that goes for any videos too - any identifiable landmarks in them?

Well, apparently Belarus released an official statement about it when they sacked the two generals:

http://www.euronews.com/2012/07/31/...cials-sacked-over-teddy-bear-stunt/

Now, I'm usually will to run down sources all day, but I'm afraid that sort of exhausts my incredulity. Something happened that got two generals fired and two people arrested.

This news source says 'Belarus Confirms Teddy Bear Air Drop':

http://agonist.org/node/75541

Now, they might take it all back tomorrow, but as far as I can tell, that's what's going on. erm

The question is, did Belarus confirm the drop because they had evidence, or because the net was flooded with false testimonials, false interviews, false videos? This PR company has been known to be very thorough in its w*rk.

We might never be quite sure of what happened or didn't happen.

Well, I suppose nothing is ever knowable, in an ultimate sense...and saying they did it, without doing it, would not only be cheaper, but safer, too...

I doubt, however, that Belarus would fire two generals on the basis of an internet hoax, nor do I think it is logical to assume that this government would state publicly that their airspace had been invaded when it hadn't. At least, I find that hard to believe. shrug

Oh, but to some, the Internet is the ultimate truth, and Lukashenko hasn't exactly appeared to be quite sane - to me, at least. More like a war-mongering egotistical dictator - but that's only my personal opinion. Although I suspect he might be slightly paranoid.

I'm with you on the paranoia charge, Titania. War-mongering dictators usually look paranoid to me, too - but that, again, is just my opinion.

Maybe await further developments?
